The Reality of Drawing Cartoons for a Living

My mission in writing this blog is to help editorial and creative freelancers make a living as freelancers. In pursuit of this, I try to shed light on what it's really like to work in a certain position (eg, writer, graphic designer, illustrator, etc.). After all, knowledge is power!

During my web surfing today, I found this interesting article about cartoonists. I hope you find it enlightening -- and informative. (Click title to access article.)

Enjoy, and have a good weekend. I remain editorially yours,

Re: What was the worst job you ever had before you began freelancing? Why?

All my life, people have told me that I should write, which is good because I enjoy writing. I write on my blog, my journal, on loose pieces of paper. I write reviews, editorials, essays, directions to the supermarket . . .

Unfortunately, having the desire to write does not guarantee work.

Right now I am entangled in a Catch-22 that is all to familiar to students and young writers: I cannot get published due to a lack of experience, and I cannot get experience because I cannot get published. I've had many, many, bad jobs. Probably too many to count.

Freelance Writer Series: The Worst Job I Ever Had Before Freelancing

Stuffed in a Locker, Giving Needles to Toddlers, Poopy Dogs & More!
AN EXCERPT
by Cheryl Santa Maria

I've had many, many, bad jobs. Probably too many to count.

I once volunteered to participate in a student film, where I was stuffed into a locker -- repeatedly -- until the perfect shot was captured.

There was also the time I was housesitting for my cousin, who had a yappy little dog that liked to leave surprises in my shoes.

I've distributed flyers, I've worked in factories. I've been a greeter. I've organized files in an office. I've had jobs so dull that I could literally feel my brain turning into mush.

PUBLISHER'S NOTE: Can you relate? Read the full, hilarious account tomorrow!

Inkwell Editorial Freelance Staffing Needs

In my May 25 blog post, I broached the question of would Inkwell Editorial start up its staffing division again. Now, as the best things in life seem to happen, the universe has answered the question for me.

We are in need of FREELANCE graphic designers, web designers and copywriters (especially those who specialize in technology, health, finance and marketing).

Why the need now? We have started to advertise for, and take on, projects for clients where they want a complete team in place to produce their marketing materials (eg, sales letters, e-campaigns, direct mail packages, web copy, etc.).

So, instead of outsourcing, for example, just the writing, clients can outsource the whole shebang -- the writing, editing, copyediting, web design, graphic design and even the mailing of their materials. For this, we are seeking to set up relationships with professionals we can call on again and again.

We are looking for FREELANCE professionals with the following credentials:
1. At least 2 years experience within your discipline
2. A dedicated home office (fax, phone, HIGH-SPEED Internect connection)
3. Freelances full-time (some projects are rush, so sometimes turnaround times are tight)
4. At least 3 professional references
5. At least 3 samples of your work

Send all RESUMES ONLY to freelancework [at] inkwelleditorial.com. If we are interested after reviewing your resume, we will ask you for samples, references, etc. later. Please SEND ONLY A RESUME INITIALLY PASTED INTO THE BODY OF THE EMAIL -- NO ATTACHMENTS -- THEY WILL BE DELETED WITHOUT EVER BEING READ. We will only contact those we are interested in working with.

We are gearing up for a very busy fall and look forward to receiving your credentials.

Sincerely,
Y. Black, Publisher
