SEO Writing: A Case Study Continued

Today we check in on SEO Mary. Who is she? What’s she all about. To read the entire series from the beginning, following these links: Part I, Part II, Part III, Part IV, Part V. Following is the latest installment, Part VI.

The last time we left SEO Mary, she was having problems completing her first assignment from her first client.

She wrote:

EMAIL FROM MARY ABOUT PROBLEMS WITH HER FIRST SEO WRITING ASSIGNMENT

... he's [the client] sent back my first piece TWICE for a re-write. The first one he said was too article-like/blog post-like for a category page. The second was too keyword heavy and wasn't talking TO the site's potential clients, but AT them. All well and good and I'm happy to rework them. We even chatted on the phone tonight and I got more feedback and I've just sent off the piece again.

In addition to (or perhaps, because of) client problems, doubt had started to creep in on Mary. She addressed this by writing:

EMAIL FROM MARY ABOUT HER DOUBTS & A RESOLUTION SHE MADE

A small part of me worries that I just won't "get" this. But I know that's impossible. I may make mistakes and missteps and very possibly lose a client -- or two or three or four or even five -- before I do "get" it. But I'm not giving up. I've set a deadline: If I'm not making at least $250/week by April 5 (three months after my first query), I may decide to hang it up.

How to Find Undiscovered Freelance Writing Jobs

Finding freelance writing jobs is time-consuming and frustrating. Take for example Craigslist.org. It practically has a monopoly on freelance writing gigs. By the time you get to apply though, the listings have either disappeared or the job poster has been so inundated with requests that you have a poor chance of landing a gig.

Many major sites have what I called “undiscovered” freelance writing jobs, though. Take Constant-Content and their Requested Content. What exactly is “Requested Content” on Constant-Content.com? It is explained this way on the site:

Our request system sets us apart from other web content sites. You can specify your exact needs including word count, desired keywords, topics, and anything else you may need and a call will go out to our stable of writers. The writers will put together articles and post them directly to your request. If you like what you see, you can purchase the article. If you don't, you're under no obligation whatsoever. You can even post a private request to a specific writer. For example, if you've found a writer here that writes in a style you like, you can specifically ask that writer to work on a project with you.
To learn more, click here. I find these offers interesting because they beat the rates offered on sites like Elance and GetaFreelancer which I, quite frankly, find sickening.

So, today’s list of freelance writing jobs comes from the Requested Content category on Constant-Content.com. Note: You must sign up to the site to be eligible for these offers. And, you can sign up to receive them directly in your inbox as soon as they are posted.

Find Paid Freelance Writing Assignments Fairly Quickly

I receive roughly 10-20 requests a week from the Requested Content category on CC, so it seems like a good opportunity to start getting some paid work fairly quickly if you apply to enough of them. The topics are wide ranging too – from baby stuff to light erotica (no kidding!).

Good luck in landing a gig here, and if you do, let me know about it so I can share it with others, a la “SEO Mary.” Speaking of her, I’ll give an update tomorrow. You can follow this series from the beginning via the following links: Part I, Part II, Part III, Part IV, Part V.

How to Get the Most Marketing Bang Out of Blog Commenting

Commenting on blogs (and in forums) is one of the most effective ways to bring traffic to your site/blog. But, have you ever taken the time to assess how to go about it to make it really effective. For example, should you post to many blogs, or frequent a few high traffic ones?

For about the last month, I’ve made a concerted effort to implement blog commenting as part of my marketing strategy. I try to do a certain number of comments per day (5). It usually doesn’t work out that way, but as I used to practically never leave comments anywhere, I’ve made a marked improvement. I’m anxious to see the results over time.

Anyway, for some “rules” I implemented on how to get the most back for my blog commenting buck, mosey on over to BloggingTips.com. It’s where you can find my musings every Wednesday at noon by the way.

How to Learn from Problem Clients & Online Writing Jobs

In yesterday’s post, I told you about a client who tried to pay $25 for a $125 press release. Here are some more lessons from that encounter.

Remember when I mentioned in that post yesterday that the client didn’t know the difference between an article and a press release? I was amazed because to look at their site, you’d think they were a highly successful internet marketing firm.

I mean, one of their services was writing and distributing press releases for clients. Following are a few more lessons I learned – yet again – from that client. And, I say, “yet again” because I’ve been at this long enough that I’ve run across some problems multiple times.

If You Want to Make a Living as a Freelance Writer, Don't Forget the Following (read the entire post here).

SEO Writing Jobs for Today
(see note in yesterday’s post about why I’ve started to list these)

Writers Wanted for Online How-To Resource

Freelance Online Writer

Freelance Web Content Writers Part Time Work from Home

All New Magazine Seeks Freelance Writers

Health and Fitness Freelance Writers

Disclaimer: I do not guarantee the validity of any job listings. Do your due diligence (ie, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is). My advice on finding freelance writing work: Don’t pay for work and don’t work for pennies, but do take advantage of opportunities.

I hope everybody had a fruitful Tuesday. I had one of those days where I just couldn't seem to get anything done. I was dragging, grouchy and just all around unmotivated. This is only supposed to happen on Mondays!!! Arrrrggghhhh. I'm going to bed early tonight and will try for a more productive day tomorrow.

One more thing: A new issue of Inkwell Editorial's newsletter, How to Start a Successful Freelance Writing Career, comes out tomorrow. And, I'm gonna have a goodie in there for everybody, so don't forget to read it.

Night, night now!

SEO Writing Jobs & The Saga of the $25 Press Release Client

In Friday’s post, I promised to tell you the story of the client who tried to pay $25 for a press release, instead of $125. Here goes . . .

The Saga of the $25 Press Release Client

This client called me on a weekend. I specifically remember it was a Sunday because I was coming back from the grocery store and was preparing to take groceries out of the car.

The Grocery Story is My Good Luck Charm

As an aside, I seem to get called a lot in the grocery store. The first serious inquiry I ever got for SEO writing was a client who called me while I was grocery shopping in WalMart. We spent a good 10 minutes talking, and I had to tell him to excuse the announcement for sale items coming over the loud speaker. He chuckled at that and right then, I knew he was going to be cool to work with. That’s proven to be the case.

But, I digress . . . back to this, the $25 press release client.

So I’m getting ready to step out of my car to unload bags and my phone rings. I did deep in the recesses of my purse, and finally locate my phone. I answer it and am surprised because it’s a potential client – calling on a Sunday. Not many do this.

Cold Emailing Works!

He tells me he got my email (I cold email a lot) and was impressed with my credentials, yadda, yadda, yadda. He owns an internet marketing firm and needs me to do some press releases for his clients. He tells me he’ll start me off with one first, to see how it goes. And, if all goes well, he’ll be using me for other stuff as well, eg, article writing, etc.

I’m psyched, of course.

NOTE: We don’t discuss price, because I assume he’s viewed my site from the link I sent him and knows what it costs (this will come back to haunt me).

Later on that evening, I log on to see if he sent the project, but nothing. I’m not worried though. As he called on a Sunday and seemed in a bit of a rush, I just assumed that he would send it.
He sends it the next day, and gives me a couple of days to get it back to him.

If you’ll remember from Friday’s post, I told you the reason he wanted me to write the release is because the company sold a product for the home construction industry. They sent me two versions of the press release they wanted me to revise. One was written by them (it was too long), and the other was written by their client (it was too technical and too long).

Typical Press Release Writing Problems from Clients That You’ll Be Called on To Fix (read the entire post here.)

Tomorrow’s Post
More on this client and upselling, plus a few more observations I took away from this experience (after 15+ years, I’m still amazed at the knowledge I pick up, client by client).

SEO Writing Jobs
Following are a few SEO writing jobs I quickly located on the net. I get a lot of queries asking me where to find work (many still have trouble knowing where to start). I think it’s because they don’t know exactly what types of jobs to look for. So, I’m going to start listing a few jobs in each post just to show you the kinds of things I apply for sometimes.

Types of SEO Writing Jobs

Since my foray into SEO writing, I’ve had some interesting projects. I’ve learned a ton.

As a side point, I feel like I could beat the crapola out of anyone on Jeopardy or Who Wants to Be a Millionaire these days. As an SEO writer, you write about a little of everything. Hence, I’ve picked up tidbits on a lot of things. For example, did you know that wedding cake toppers have a rich cultural history that dates back to the 1890s. Neither did I?

I’m a sucker by nature for reading and soaking up information. I guess that’s why this field appeals to me so much.

A reader wrote in asking me what types of projects I work on as an SEO writer. I went back through a month’s worth of work, and the following is what I came up with (note: some are not SEO writing, but clients contacted me because I queried them as an SEO writer):

Typical Projects I Worked on as an SEO Writer in the Last Month (read it here).

Happy writing everybody!

Do You Dilute Your Own Blog When You Blog for Others?

I had an interesting conundrum (and a mini crying spell) this week. I landed two steady writing gigs. And, while on the surface this doesn't appear to be a problem, one of them caused me a moment of anxiety.

What was it? How did I resolve it? Read the entire post over at BloggingTips.com, a blog I contribute to on a weekly basis.

How One Freelancer Landed a Client 6 Days After Starting to Market

This post is an update on “SEO Mary.” Mary recently landed her first SEO writing client, less than a week after she started to market.

FYI, Mary is a freelance writer who has been allowing us an inside peek into how she’s starting her SEO writing career. To read this series from the beginning, follow these links: Part I, Part II, Part III, Part IV. This is Part V, the final version.

NOTE: Mary has agreed to give me periodic updates. Hence, at some point in the future, I’ll give an update on her story. Now, on to the latest.

When we left off last, Mary had landed her first client. Upon officially landing the client she wrote:

EMAIL FROM MARY ABOUT OFFICIALLY LANDING HER FIRST SEO WRITING CLIENT

I DO have my first client (got the assignment/keywords Monday) just SIX days after sending out my first query. This is from the company that wanted the category pages [the one discussed in Part IV]. I asked about deadline and he told me he wanted them to "trickle" in. . . . [he] will be sending me work, starting tomorrow ! :-)

And the other, who asked about my writing full websites and asking about my SEO experience - I e-mailed him back today with the explanation -- similar to yours -- that I'm a long-time writer getting into the SEO niche -- and hope he'll use me. We'll see. . .
###

BUT, all was not going smoothly with her first assignment. Mary recounts:

How to Land New Clients in Less than a Week: One Freelancer's Success Story

This post is an update on “Mary,” a freelance writer who has been allowing me to chronicle her foray into writing SEO content for a living after buying my ebook on the subject.

Some brief background info: Mary works fulltime. She’s being trying to get to the point where she freelances fulltime but has faltered a bit. She wrote:

I've been a long-time reader of your blog. I've been trying to start a free-lance biz and have faltered. I saw your blog postings about how you got SEO writing gigs almost lickety split, so I purchased your e-book and did everything you said.

Mary recently landed her first SEO writing client, less than a week after she started to market. To read this series from the beginning, follow these links: Part I, Part II, Part III. This is Part IV. The final version, Part V, will be published on Monday, 2/18.

Mary Lands Her First SEO Client – Just Days after Starting to Market!

Has lightning struck three times? I first started writing SEO content after running across a post entitled How I made $100,000 by spending 25 minutes and $0 on Marketing on SelfMadeChick.com.

In this brilliant post, Christine, the blog owner relays how she started her career in SEO writing. She writes:

Within 10 minutes [after sending out 5 queries to SEO companies] I already had a call from someone who desperately needed what I had to offer. … That one contact paid all of my bills for almost a year, allowed me to build a huge portfolio, and I am still working with them today.

Lightning strike 1!

Hope everyone had a Happy Valentine's Day. I did, which is why I'm posting kinda late tonight (my fiance works the late shift, so we celebrated today :-))

Get SEO Writing Work With No Experience: How One Freelancer Did It

Today’s post is an update on “Mary’s story.” Who is Mary? Mary is a freelance writer who recently started to do SEO writing. She bought my ebook on the subject and started to get queries from clients before she even started to market. Read about that here.

Along the way, Mary has generously allowed me to chronicle her story, from her panic of answering that first email query from a client, to advice I gave her on how to grow her business to make $5,000/month, or more, by outsourcing work to other freelancers. Here’s the latest on Mary’s foray into the SEO writing sector.

Email Received from Mary

“Yuwanda . . . I just finished an e-mail "blast" to 15 SEO companies. I'm making some progress. I just checked my site's stats . . . after sending out queries the last couple of days. And this time they [site visitors] stayed longer . . . and looked at almost all of my site's pages, something that hasn't happened yet. So I'm rather pleased.

Email I Sent to Mary

Mary that's great! Keep up the good work, and let me know about that first PAYING project.

Email Received from Mary Later that Same Day

Mary: So I come home from work and what do I see, this e-mail from one of my queries:

How to Make 5K+/Month, or More, Writing SEO Articles

If you’re an SEO writer (aka article writer, SEO content provider, web writer, etc.), you’re probably busy. And if you’re not, I guarantee you there’s a marketing flaw.

SEO content writing is a hot niche in freelance writing right now, and you can quickly become overwhelmed, as one freelancer recently learned.

To give some background on this article, this post is a direct result of one freelance writer’s recently foray into SEO writing. Briefly, she bought my ebook on SEO writing, and started to get queries before she even started to market. Read about that here.

She was afraid she’d get overwhelmed quickly, and as she worked full-time, I advised that she should consider outsourcing.I directed her to an article I’d written before on how to go about hiring outsourcers, and told her I’d write one specifically as it pertains to the SEO industry today. So, here goes:

Tomorrow's Post: "Mary" the freelancer who's just starting her SEO writing career I blogged about in the link above, got three client queries after only one week of marketing and just landed her first project. Read the update tomorrow!

How One Freelancer Got Work w/No Marketing: Can It Happen to You?

A panicked freelancer recently contacted me with a problem most would love to have – before she even started to market, a potential client came aknocking! “Huh, how did that happen?” you might be wondering.

Let me explain.

Getting Clients w/ No Marketing – It Happens!

“Mary” is a long-time reader of my blog and recently purchased my ebook on SEO writing. She said she did everything I said and before she could even start to market for work, a query from an SEO company had come her way.

She wrote:

Dear Yuwanda:

First of all, please forgive my asking you this. But I have a wonderful "problem" that has occurred suddenly. . . Let me explain. I've been a long-time reader of your blog. I've been trying to start a free-lance biz and have faltered. I saw your blog postings about how you got SEO writing gigs almost lickety split, so I purchased your e-book and did everything you said. Here's my website: (she listed her website address).

The site's been up for a few weeks. But I have done nothing. (I work full-time and wanted to finish up a small free-lance newsletter gig I have via my copywriting site before I started marketing SEO writing. I never sent out ANY queries. No marketing. Zilch. Zero. Nada. Goose egg. However....today, I receive a query from an SEO firm.

Is It Time to Give Up Free Article Marketing?

Every Wednesday at noon, I post on BloggingTips.com (BT). Today I wrote about free article marketing, as in, is it time to give it up as a marketing strategy.

As many of you know, I literally wrote the book (ebook) on article marketing entitled Everything You Ever Wanted to Know about Article Marketing: Results of a 30-day Article Marketing Experiment. And, while I do think it still has its place, it's a method I'm using less and less, as I discuss in my BT post. Check it out and let me know your thoughts.

5 Reasons Freelance Writing Websites & Blogs Don’t Make Money on Ads

Last month, for perhaps the first time since I started writing ebooks, I started to place ads to promote them – small ads on popular freelance writing sites.

On quite a few sites I ran across, I wanted to place an ad, but hated where the ads were placed, so I didn’t. I think a lot of website owners who are seeking to monetize their sites via ads are losing out.

The Ongoing Saga of a Problem Client

On Saturday, I blogged about what happened with a large amount of articles I had to turn in to a client, but just couldn’t seem to get going on. This goes back to last Thursday’s post. So, if you want to catch up to what this post is all about, start with this one first.

The cliffhanger was when I logged on Saturday to turn in the remainder of the article to the client and received a note from the company asking me to “halt production,” so to speak.

Here’s the latest:
********************
Want to learn how to make at least $250/day writing simple 500-word articles? Read how here.
********************
The note from my client said that he had a family emergency and wanted me to stop working on his article. I was a bit flummoxed by his message, because it just said he would contact me when his family crisis passed.

I don’t believe it’s the content because we had numerous conversations about exactly what he wanted beforehand.

And, I don’t think it was the missed deadline because: (i) it was only a few hours (from Friday night to Saturday morning); and (ii) as he only wanted me to write his content (and not one of the outsourcers I use), I had warned him that my schedule was extremely tight (even though I did promise him it would be done on Friday).

“So, what could be the problem?” you ask.

My gut is telling me this – the parameters of the project have changed. I get this feeling because of a few things:

Common Problems with an Uncommon Client

(i) Client doesn’t know what they want: In my conversations with this client, I could tell that he didn’t exactly know what he wanted. The reason we’ve had numerous conversations (which is a rarity with the bulk of my clients) is because of clarification issues.

Usually, I rely on clients to tell me what they want. Eg, I have a website about weddings. I want five articles on these keyword phrases. The density is to be between 3-5%. The topics are as follows, blah, blah, blah.

The first clue that I had that this client was not knowledgeable about SEO is that he asked me what keyword density was. Now, I don’t mind working with clients who don’t understand SEO, but don’t leave me to believe that you do when you don’t.

As we got more comfortable with each other, he flat out stated that I was the expert and to use my opinion on which phrases to optimize for. Okay, one issue down.

(ii) Unclear directions: The next issue I had with this client is the way he gave direction. He wasn’t rude or anything; I’m referring to his unclear manner of explaining things. You know how you have something worked out in your head and when you go to explain it to somebody else they just don’t seem to get it?

And, once they start asking you questions you realized that you’ve skipped over some rudimentary steps because, after all, you know what you’re trying to say. THAT’S what I mean.

Once I got the hang of what he was saying, I parroted back to him what he wanted for clarification. This took some doing, mind you. I don’t charge consultation fees, but some clients make you seriously consider it.

Taking into account the number of hours I spent on the phone with him, I was easily out about three hours.

(iii) Non-business hours communication: About 95 percent of my client interaction is via email – and that’s the way I like it. This client, however, prefers phone communication.

While I’m mostly fine with that, I don’t like to take phone calls on the weekends, which is when this client has a penchant for calling. I finally overcame this issue by telling him in a polite way that I’m not accessible via phone on the weekends, but that he could feel free to contact me via email and I would get back to him during weekday business hours. He got the message.

I received the check in the mail today for the project (he’d asked me to pre-submit an invoice and sent it off before I even started on the last batch of articles), and my contractual obligations have been fulfilled.

Why Some Clients Cost You Money & What You Can Do About It

Now, I’m just waiting to see what this latest wrinkle in the project is to determine if I want to continue working with him. As outlined in Tip #2 in this article, some clients cost you money, and you have to really weigh if its worth keeping them on as clients.

While he’s a very nice client with a lot of work, he takes up a lot of my time, which is one of my pet peeves when it comes to business. I like to work with clients who give me a project, put a deadline on it and leave me alone to get it done.

If anybody’s interested, I’ll post an update once I speak to him. And, that’s the latest folks.

Hope y’all (yes, I’m southern!) had a good weekend, and don’t forget to vote tomorrow of your state is holding a primary election.

When a Deadline Interferes w/a Promise to a Lover

The Results of My “What Happened When You Just Can’t Get Going on a Project” Post

In my last post, I was griping about a major project I had due that I just couldn’t seem to get going on. To my surprise, quite a few emailed me wanting to know what happened. So, here goes.

I blew the deadline. I turned in 20 of the 26 pages of copy that was due. But, I blew it not because I couldn’t finish, but because of a family commitment, which brings me to a topic I’d been wanting to write on anyway (funny how the universe just lines things up sometime).

When a Deadline Interferes with a Promise to a Lover

First, some background. I’m engaged and I have no children, so that’s not a problem (parents have different, more pressing needs they can’t ignore). I live with my fiancĂ©. We work different schedules – he’s on third shift and of course, I work during the day -- from home. Complicating matters even more, my fiance’s schedule fluctuates (he never has the same days off from week to week).

That being said, we don’t get to spend that much time together – and I’m talking about time where both of us are alert and feel like doing something other than vegging on the couch and falling asleep on a movie.

Yesterday, when this project was due, I had promised him that I would log off by 7pm at the latest so that we could have our planned date night. We do our best to squeeze one of these in at least every two weeks. It was once a week, but it just never worked out, so we try do something together at least twice a month.

Keeping Promises to Keep a Love Life

I could have begged off “date night” and he would have understood (he accepts that I’m a workaholic), but I’ve been crazy busy lately and even the hour or two we try to grab in the evenings before he goes to work hasn’t been happening lately.

So, for one of the few times in my life, I put my relationship above a deadline. I sent the 20 articles I had finished to the client along with a note that the remainder would follow today – and they did.

A Wrinkle in the Project

So, I log on to send the remainder of the articles in, and there’s a note from the client. He wants me to hold up on the remaining articles (the ones I finished up and sent) because he needs to talk to me about the project. I’m thinking, what can it be?

The missed deadline, the articles I sent in, the other websites he wants me to work on . . . what? My gut's telling me it's something else . . . based on past experiences I've had with him.

Stay tuned for the remainder of the story on Monday. Keeping further promises, I have to have dinner with my fiancĂ© before he goes to work. And, as I put in about 70 hours last week, I’ve promised myself that I won’t log on at all tomorrow.

Enjoy the rest of the weekend everybody and I promise to catch you up on Monday.
