Yuwanda, you will not believe how timely your post is. Yesterday, I received an email from an old co-worker looking for a white paper writer. I didn't give it much thought because I don't have experience with white papers. Now, I'm second-guessing that decision. Do I dare say I'm up for the job when I have no white paper samples? Help!

Leovirgo: Funny how some posts are so timely -- I love those.

Regarding your request, I would definitely take on this project, keeping the following in mind:

i) Inform your contact that you have been a freelance writer for X number of years, and white papers are a niche you'd like to break into. Be honest with them b/c 9 times out of 10, you will be asked for white paper samples (this is not a niche you can fluff your way through).

ii) RE: samples. Come up with some of your best samples that are close in nature to white papers -- eg, sales and marketing brochures, sales letters, landing pages, etc.
At least the potential client will be able to see some evidence of your skill as a writer; and

iii) Offer a steep, steep discount -- or even offer to do it for free if you think that'll gain you entre to this market.

It could pay off big in the long-run because usually when a company is satisfied with a white paper writer, they use them over and over again -- and may be able to refer you to other clients.

Good luck and let me know how it turns out.
