How to Respond to Clients Who Want You to Change Your Rates for Steady Work

Last week, I received the following email from a freelance writer who bought my ebook on SEO writing, was landing clients at one rate (after only a couple of weeks of marketing), and wondered if she should go lower for this one client who promised steady work.

She wrote:

Hi Yuwanda, I received the following response to one of my marketing emails from an SEO company. I thought I was pretty bargain basement at $20 when I have no experience. I've been marketing for a couple of weeks, and I've already gotten a couple of clients so far (emphasis added) so I'm not willing to work for these rates; I don't think I need to. But I'm wondering how I should respond to him at this point? Could he be just testing to see if I'll bite? Thanks BL

SEO Writer: One Freelance Writer's Success Story

Today’s update is on SEO Mary, which I’ve been promising practically all week. I’ve been so busy lately that I didn’t even query Mary. Sweet soul that she is, I think she’s come to feel some responsibility to readers of her foray into SEO writing, so she took it upon herself to email me.

Even though I would have gotten around to it eventually, I’m glad she took the step. FYI, this is officially Part VII of this series. Read it from the beginning here.

Series Note: I had put an official end to this series at Part V. Obviously, it’s gone past that and may go a few more. I’ll always have a post on my blog when I’m going to post an update to the series.

Mary Lands a Client Who LOVES Her Work -- She writes:

Good afternoon, Yuwanda. I've been wanting to e-mail you with an update, but wanted to wait until I had definitive news -- and now I have it! Things are progressing well. I have a client who LOVES my work. I've written seven articles for him so far, and he's hoping to give me more soon. I know I should be marketing more but I'm going to be absolutely swamped with work over the next few weeks, because....

(Read the rest here)

Have a good weekend everybody. I'm feeling a little under the weather, so am knocking off early today to get some rest. Don't forget -- job leads are below.

How to Hire Experienced SEO Writers: Learn from One Freelancer's Unfortunate Experience

This week, I’m doing a Mail Bag Roundup, so to speak. As I mentioned in yesterday’s post, I’ve gotten quite a bit of mail this week that I thought I’d answer here. That way, everyone can benefit from it.

In contrast to yesterday’s newbie query, today’s question is from a reader who’s a “victim” of her own SEO writing success. But, if you ever find yourself in this situation, it can be downright frustrating, to say the least.

Here’s what she wrote to me. Today’s post is a long one, but a chance to learn a ton. So, here goes . . . (read the rest here).

TOMORROW’S POST: I’m going to update you on SEO Mary, who’s flying pretty high these days – and none too soon. I’m so sleepy right now, I’m trying to decide whether to just take a quick nap, or soldier on through and get my workout in . . . Oh, don’t forget to see job leads below.

Guidelines for Building a Freelance Writing Portfolio by Blogging

As many of you know, I contribute to AssociatedContent a lot. One of my subscribers over there asked an interesting question that I answered in my regular Wednesday post at BloggingTips.com.

He, in essence, wanted to know how to build his freelance writing resume by blogging. Even though he's a newbie to freelance writing, I felt compelled to answer because: (i) well, he asked; and (ii) as I say in today's post, I think many of us who have much more experience are hesitant to answer these types of posts in detail because we get them all the time and seem to answer them in 100 different ways.

Knowing What NOT to Do Is as Important -- Or More -- Than Knowing What to Do

But, as this had to do with blogging in particular, which is a relatively new medium (compared to say newsletters or article marketing), I thought it deserved and in-depth post (if for no other reason than to tell him what NOT to do). You can read the full missive here.

Don't forget to read the comment (the first one as of this writing). It's quite illuminating I thought. I have personal experience with this and have been thinking about doing a post on it for a minute now. In due time . . . in due time.

TOMORROW'S POST: We'll turn the tables and I'll answer a question sent in by an SEO writer who is kind of a victim of her own success. Don't forget to check out the freelance job listings below.

Stay tuned!

How One Freelancer Landed a Client 6 Days After Starting to Market

This post is an update on “SEO Mary.” Mary recently landed her first SEO writing client, less than a week after she started to market.

FYI, Mary is a freelance writer who has been allowing us an inside peek into how she’s starting her SEO writing career. To read this series from the beginning, follow these links: Part I, Part II, Part III, Part IV. This is Part V, the final version.

NOTE: Mary has agreed to give me periodic updates. Hence, at some point in the future, I’ll give an update on her story. Now, on to the latest.

When we left off last, Mary had landed her first client. Upon officially landing the client she wrote:

EMAIL FROM MARY ABOUT OFFICIALLY LANDING HER FIRST SEO WRITING CLIENT

I DO have my first client (got the assignment/keywords Monday) just SIX days after sending out my first query. This is from the company that wanted the category pages [the one discussed in Part IV]. I asked about deadline and he told me he wanted them to "trickle" in. . . . [he] will be sending me work, starting tomorrow ! :-)

And the other, who asked about my writing full websites and asking about my SEO experience - I e-mailed him back today with the explanation -- similar to yours -- that I'm a long-time writer getting into the SEO niche -- and hope he'll use me. We'll see. . .
###

BUT, all was not going smoothly with her first assignment. Mary recounts:

How to Land New Clients in Less than a Week: One Freelancer's Success Story

This post is an update on “Mary,” a freelance writer who has been allowing me to chronicle her foray into writing SEO content for a living after buying my ebook on the subject.

Some brief background info: Mary works fulltime. She’s being trying to get to the point where she freelances fulltime but has faltered a bit. She wrote:

I've been a long-time reader of your blog. I've been trying to start a free-lance biz and have faltered. I saw your blog postings about how you got SEO writing gigs almost lickety split, so I purchased your e-book and did everything you said.

Mary recently landed her first SEO writing client, less than a week after she started to market. To read this series from the beginning, follow these links: Part I, Part II, Part III. This is Part IV. The final version, Part V, will be published on Monday, 2/18.

Mary Lands Her First SEO Client – Just Days after Starting to Market!

Has lightning struck three times? I first started writing SEO content after running across a post entitled How I made $100,000 by spending 25 minutes and $0 on Marketing on SelfMadeChick.com.

In this brilliant post, Christine, the blog owner relays how she started her career in SEO writing. She writes:

Within 10 minutes [after sending out 5 queries to SEO companies] I already had a call from someone who desperately needed what I had to offer. … That one contact paid all of my bills for almost a year, allowed me to build a huge portfolio, and I am still working with them today.

Lightning strike 1!

Hope everyone had a Happy Valentine's Day. I did, which is why I'm posting kinda late tonight (my fiance works the late shift, so we celebrated today :-))

Get SEO Writing Work With No Experience: How One Freelancer Did It

Today’s post is an update on “Mary’s story.” Who is Mary? Mary is a freelance writer who recently started to do SEO writing. She bought my ebook on the subject and started to get queries from clients before she even started to market. Read about that here.

Along the way, Mary has generously allowed me to chronicle her story, from her panic of answering that first email query from a client, to advice I gave her on how to grow her business to make $5,000/month, or more, by outsourcing work to other freelancers. Here’s the latest on Mary’s foray into the SEO writing sector.

Email Received from Mary

“Yuwanda . . . I just finished an e-mail "blast" to 15 SEO companies. I'm making some progress. I just checked my site's stats . . . after sending out queries the last couple of days. And this time they [site visitors] stayed longer . . . and looked at almost all of my site's pages, something that hasn't happened yet. So I'm rather pleased.

Email I Sent to Mary

Mary that's great! Keep up the good work, and let me know about that first PAYING project.

Email Received from Mary Later that Same Day

Mary: So I come home from work and what do I see, this e-mail from one of my queries:

How to Make 5K+/Month, or More, Writing SEO Articles

If you’re an SEO writer (aka article writer, SEO content provider, web writer, etc.), you’re probably busy. And if you’re not, I guarantee you there’s a marketing flaw.

SEO content writing is a hot niche in freelance writing right now, and you can quickly become overwhelmed, as one freelancer recently learned.

To give some background on this article, this post is a direct result of one freelance writer’s recently foray into SEO writing. Briefly, she bought my ebook on SEO writing, and started to get queries before she even started to market. Read about that here.

She was afraid she’d get overwhelmed quickly, and as she worked full-time, I advised that she should consider outsourcing.I directed her to an article I’d written before on how to go about hiring outsourcers, and told her I’d write one specifically as it pertains to the SEO industry today. So, here goes:

Tomorrow's Post: "Mary" the freelancer who's just starting her SEO writing career I blogged about in the link above, got three client queries after only one week of marketing and just landed her first project. Read the update tomorrow!

A Day in the Life of an SEO Writer

Almost a year ago (2/15/07), I wrote a post entitled A Day in the Life of a Busy Commercial Freelance Writer. Oh how times have changed!

My post today, entitled A Day in the Life of an SEO Writer, highlights how much things have changed in my freelance writing business since I wrote that entry last year. Today's post, by the way, is over at BloggingTips.com. I realize that I'm much happier with my work now than I was then.

I have a more diverse clientele, enjoy the type of work I do more, have gotten super organized and am making much more money than I was this time last year (I've had an incredible few months since I started writing SEO content, stretching back to right before the holidays).

Yep, I've definitely found my niche.

FYI, BloggingTips.com is an industry-leading blog I now write for (today was my first post). Check it out. BloggingTips.com is a multi-author blog which is dedicated to helping bloggers create, maintain and improve their blogs. [Source: BloggingTips.com]

There's lots of stuff there on how to make money online, how to make money as a freealance writer, how to make money blogging, etc. It's all written by industry leading authors like Deborah [Ng] from FreelanceWritingGigs.com and Angela [Booth] from Blogging For Dollars. And now, little ole me. Yep, they let me join the club!

Every Wednesday, my posts can be found over at BloggingTips.com. Don't worry, I'll post a link here directing you to it.

Here's to some wing spreading!

Sincerely,
