9 Useful Tips for Bloggers: How to Stand Out from the Crowd

Well, you have a blog now and want your voice to be heard out loud? So does everyone else. It’s no surprise to see that the blogsphere is getting more and more crowded. Proof? Technorati recorded that 7,200 new blogs were established per hour in 2006. I'm sure the figures have increased exponentially since then.

As such, it's impossible for a blogger to achieve success by modeling what others are doing. In fact, being different is now the key to success. There are of course,tons of good ways to make your blog stand out from the crowd. Here, I compile a list of 9 crucial ways to do just that. I hope it helps.

1. Choose a unique topic

Yes, it’s not easy to select a unique topic to blog about. However, being unique is a good way to stand out from the rest. Even if you can't find a unique subject, viewing an old topic from a different point of view is good enough. Think about EduBlogs.org – there are thousands of free blogging platforms, but by focusing their services on teachers and students, their blogging service stand out from the rest, and hence is remarkably successful.

2. Write in-depth content

Don’t just brush over a topic. There are too many “me too” blogs that write short postd in a hurry. These blog posts are so brief that it hardly delivers any value to the readers. Writing in-depth posts earns you creditability in your niche. It encourages people to read further; subscribe; and even link to you. All in all, writing in-depth posts helps your blog to stand out from the rest (who are too lazy to do their research).

3. Build a blog with a professional design platform

Stop using that free blog templates that are used by other 7,809 bloggers (yes I'm fully aware that this blog using a free platform; ie, blogger)). It’s boring to stumble thru tons of blog with the similar designs and layouts. It doesn’t take a huge effort to create a special blog designs. Spend some time (or money) to get your blog template customized, ensuring that it is unique and user-friendly. Every blogger should be aware that visual impressions count and you should enhance your blog design from time to time.

4. Write eye-catching headlines

A good headline attracts readers -- and encourages them to read further. As mentioned by Brian of CopyBlogger.com, 8 out of 10 readers will bypass your main content and read headlines only. This shows the importance of blog headlines. Polishing your copywriting skills is a must if you wish to stand out from the rest and increase your blog readership.

5. Write list posts and sub headlines

Readers don’t read thru everything; they browse and the Internet. I tend to scroll down and scan thru before I read a blog post every time. Constructing your post in lists and with sub headlines simply improves the readability of your blog. It helps readers to learn what your blog post is about and encourages prospective readers to read in detail.

6. Optimize your blog for search engines

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is something every blogger should learn. Making correct usage of your header tags; building incoming links; and writing with SEO in mind is crucial to increasing your blog visibility.

7. Build your blog on its own domain

While starting a blog on blogger or WordPress is good because it's free, you are actually missing a lot by not hosting your blog on its own domain. A blog with its own domain/hosting enjoys better advantages in term of branding and web marketing. It doesn’t have the amateur image like a free WordPress blog, and it comes with better flexibility in term of web functionality.

Finally, it’s cheap and easy to host a blog on its own domain. A shared hosting normally cost $5 - $10 per month, In case you need help with hosting, read my web hosting review.

8. Show your personality

Revealing more about yourself is important to gain trust from your readers. It is, in fact, crucial to stay in touch closely with your loyal readers as this encourages feedback from your readers. Furthermore, readers tend to recommend your blogs to friends and families when they feel respected by you.

Build an ‘About’ page, connect to your readers via Facebook and MySpace; contact readers who leave comments. These are the basic ways to extend yourself to readers.

9. It’s okay to have a fight

Sparking a debate and starting a fight on controversial topics is a good way to increase your blog visibility. By speaking with a different voice, you stand out from the rest. Of course I am not telling you to be controversial just for the sake of controversy.

What I mean is is okay to stand by your beliefs, even if that means sparking controversy. After all, you get buried in the crowd if there are too many ‘Me Too’ postings on your blog.

Bonus Tip 10. Blog with consistency

Bloggers are often stimulated when they first start their blogs. After the initial thrill wears off, their postings tend to become more sporadic, until they finally stop altogether.

To succeed and stand out from the rest, you will need to be disciplined enough to blog consistently. As a reader, I am rather skeptical towards blogs that seldom gets updated. Posting regularly builds trust among your readers; and increases your creditability.

"Pull the Friggin' Trigger!"

I was talking to a brilliant friend last night. I mean, this guy is off-the-charts smart. He wants to start an internet business. He's been planning it for six months or so and is extremely motivated. But, he hasn't started yet.

I kept trying to get him to tell me what's holding him back. He kept talking around it, making excuses, explaining, etc. I finally said to him, "Just pull the friggin' trigger already!" This is a phrase I picked up from Christine at SelfMadeChick.com. I love this phrase because it's exactly what so many who want to start this, that or the other needs to do.

If you want to make money online in 2009 as a blogger, freelance writer, affiliate marketer -- whatever -- stop talking about it, worrying about it, planning it and researching it. Just do it already! You will make mistakes, it won't be easy and it will definitely test your nerves, but if you never START, you'll never get to overcome your mistakes, learn from them and move on. Mistakes are the foundation of success. Get started so you can begin making them and achieve successs that much sooner.

That's my advice as we end the year 2008.

I've had a lot of professional and personal highs and lows this year. I'm glad to see the end of 2008, mainly for personal reasons. I look forward to 2009 for professional reasons. Happy New Year everybody. Be safe and be happy.

The 8 Components of a Profitable, Popular Freelance Writing Blog

As I've been writing about this week, writing jobs kind of dry up during the summer. Today, I had one of the slowest days I've had since I started SEO writing. The summer started off with a bang -- and I thought it was going to continue that way -- but things have slowed down noticeably and I for one couldn't be happier about it.

Today, I actually finished and uploaded to e-Junkie the ebook entitled How to Start a Profitable, Popular Freelance Writing Blog that I've been putting off for about four months. It lists 8 components every freelance writing blog should have to be popular and profitable. I simply hadn't had time to polish up -- and I'd already written 90% of it. I've been that busy!

How to Generate Income During Your Down Time

Yesterday, I sent out about 75 emails to past contacts and woke up to 6 responses in my inbox this morning. I landed one project from that, which is to start next week -- with the possilbity of two more as well. Nothing's firm with these though, so I don't count them.

Freelance Writing Marketing Tip of the Day: Use your downtime wisely to catch up on projects you never seem to have time for -- and to keep on marketing. In fact, the first thing I did this morning was send out 10 more email queries.

Advice for Newbies & Nervies (Nervous Freelance Writers) During this Slow Season

I know a lot of you may be worried about this slow time. Don't be. If you continue to market, believe me, projects will seem to drop out of the sky come fall. You'll wonder what the heck is going on!

You see, what you are sending out now is being kept on file by many prospects. Proof? One of the inquiries I sent out to old contacts yesterday responded via the very first email I'd sent them last November.

Get Your Blog Exposed to 40,000 Eyeballs!

Yesterday morning, I woke up to a nice surprise. Sitting in my inbox was a comment from a reader of my post on Copyblogger.com. For those who might be unfamiliar with this site, it is one of the leading sites on the web for freelance writers and copywriters. How prestigious? The RSS feed has close to 40,000 subscribers!

Remember a couple of months back when I wrote about guest blogging? In the post entitled, Why Darren Rowse, John Chow and Brian Clark Scare Me: How Guest Blogging Helped Me to Overcome Fear, I wrote, "Even though they weren’t advertising for guest posters, I submitted posts to CopyBlogger and Problogger. To date, I haven’t heard anything. FYI, site owners won’t respond with a yes or no; they’ll just publish the piece if they decide to use it."

Well, that's exactly what happened. I sent the guest post I impetuously wrote to Mr. Clark, the brain behind Copyblogger, around the first week of May. Yesterday, he published it. I wrote him a thank you and he responded that he'd meant to notify me that it was going to be published, but he was traveling and forgot.

And, the post is still live on the front page. A full 36 hours front and center on a site like this . . . and all it cost me was time. Viva la guest posting! Get on it you all. Blog Jealousy? 4 Things You Can Learn from Famous Bloggers

A few things to address today:

1. The newsletter is out. It's here if you want to read it (it's a pdf file). Once the new site is done in a couple of weeks, you'll have to be a subscriber to get it. So subscribe if you want next month's issue -- which is shaping up to be a real page turner.

How Tech Savvy Do You Have to Be To Make Money Blogging?

This is what I posted about over at BloggingTips.com today. I was pondering this as I wrote the almost 2,000-word tutorial that was yesterday's post, ie, How to Make Money Blogging by Selling Your Blog Posts.

Writing that post made me realize two things: (i) I have a lot to learn; and (ii) I know a lot more than I thought I did. According to Technorati's 2006 State of the Blogosphere report, "As of October 2006, about 100,000 new weblogs were created each day." That's 36.5 million new web presences a year! Holy kamolie!

At the time, Technorati was only tracking 56 million blogs. It currently tracks over 112 million, so the numbers are probably even higher today, a full one and a half years later. While many of these blog will die off, they still get in the way of you making money online as a blogger, web entrepreneur and/or internet marketer.

The three tips I outline in today's post was designed to do two things: (i) make you crystallize what you know; and (ii) help you to realize what you may be lacking.

While making money online is fun (I still cant' believe I'm able to do it, which means you can too), it is a lot of work. But, becoming more tech savvy can make it an easier journey. Enjoy the post.

Will You Ever Make Money Blogging? Answer 1 Question to Find Out

In light of my recent blog debacle, I'm getting a new blog designed. Several people have written in asking me various questions about it. So I addressed them in today's post at BloggingTips.com.

One thing I want to say I've learned about getting a blog designed from scratch is that you have to put some thought into it. Choosing colors, layout and font type are all part of it. But, the most critical component to pay attention to when you're getting a blog designed from the ground up, so to speak, is purpose.

5 Signs It's Time to Move Your Blog to Another Platform

Before we get to today's post, an announcement . . .

As of today, Inkwell Editorial's blog has moved from blogger to wordpress. My blog's home here will never be forgotten, as it's where I cut my teeth on this medium, which has brought me profound success. So, goodbye blogger, it's like ending a relationship with a lover that you still crave and adore, but realize it's time to move on. Following are some relationship rules that signal whether it's time to move your blog to another platform.

Signs It's Time to Move Your Blog to Another Platform

Relationship metaphors are perfect to judge whether it's time to move yoru blog to another platform. Because, just ike your significant other, you enter into a relationship when you blog. And, over time, that relationship will exhibit the ups, downs, joys and pains of any other type of relationship. Hence, should be assessed through the same lens.

Here goes. . . signs you and yoru blog need to find new relationships . . .

1. You shouldn't fight too much at home: If you yell, scream and roll your eyes, and bang your keyboard because of some glitch with your blog, it's time to move on.

2. Love is Freeing: If you're constantly frustated at your blog's limitations and find yourself wishing that it had that feature or this, then it's time to move on.

3. You Should Grow Closer Together Over Time, Not Further Apart: Piggybacking on the last point, your blog's capability should grow with you, not inhibit you.

4. Love is Faithful: Even though you may crave all the bells and whistles of another blogging platform, if you find that you've actually tried out another one (ie, cheated on your primary blog), then it's definitely time to move on.

5. I Can't Stand the Sight of You! If everytime you look at your blog you feel that it's lacking, it's time to move on.

Why a Recession is a Great Time to Start a Freelance Writing Career

My post today is over at BloggingTips.com. It's entitled, The Mind of an Entrepreneur versus The Mind of a 9-5’er. This "unofficial" recession we're in and a conversation I had with a girlfriend who works in corporate America got me to thinking a lot about why some are scared (9-5ers), and why others aren't (freelancers).

I don't think there's ever been a better time than RIGHT NOW to start a freelance writing career. As I mentioned in yesterday's post, Why Freelance Writing Jobs are Plentiful Right Now, there's so much work out there right now it's frightening. My calender is filled to the gills! What I Learned from Talking to an Internet Marketing Firm Executive

Freelance Writing Tip of the Day: I was talking to an executive at an internet marketing firm in Ann Arbor, Michigan yesterday. I queried them a few days ago and lo and behold, someone actually called. (Usually, I get responses via email). Anyway, we wound up having a nice chat about the dearth of freelance SEO writers.

She said they do a lot of stuff in house, but had been looking for a freelance SEO writer they can outsource stuff to on a regular basis. She said they've had trouble finding skilled writers in this area, and was happy to receive my email.

Two things to take away from this:

(i) Market regularly. Even though I have so much work that my days are 18 hours right now, I still market. Where I used to send out 50 or 100 queries a week, I'm now down to 10-20. Work will come in months later, which means your pipeline will always be full. This is why many freelancers live a feast and famine existence. They stop marketing when they get busy.

When you do this, you have to ramp up again (eg, start marketing) and wait for the work to flow in (hence, a dry spell). As I've said before, since I started SEO writing, I've only about two days where I didn't have any work. That's because I'm constantly marketing, which I talk about in this ebook. (Sorry about all the ebook promotion, but it's just so darn relevant!)

(ii) Learn the basics of SEO. It's still a new, burgeoning field and you have a real chance to establish yourself before it gets too crowded.

Can you really make $2,000/week as an SEO writer?

Of course, my ebook can tell you everything you need to get started as an SEO writer. It's not as hard as you think, and the work comes fast and furious. This week I'll be billing close to $2,000 in JUST SEO writing work -- and that doesn't include work that's already done that I'm waiting on payment for, or projects that are on tap.

Guidelines for Building a Freelance Writing Portfolio by Blogging

As many of you know, I contribute to AssociatedContent a lot. One of my subscribers over there asked an interesting question that I answered in my regular Wednesday post at BloggingTips.com.

He, in essence, wanted to know how to build his freelance writing resume by blogging. Even though he's a newbie to freelance writing, I felt compelled to answer because: (i) well, he asked; and (ii) as I say in today's post, I think many of us who have much more experience are hesitant to answer these types of posts in detail because we get them all the time and seem to answer them in 100 different ways.

Knowing What NOT to Do Is as Important -- Or More -- Than Knowing What to Do

But, as this had to do with blogging in particular, which is a relatively new medium (compared to say newsletters or article marketing), I thought it deserved and in-depth post (if for no other reason than to tell him what NOT to do). You can read the full missive here.

Don't forget to read the comment (the first one as of this writing). It's quite illuminating I thought. I have personal experience with this and have been thinking about doing a post on it for a minute now. In due time . . . in due time.

How to Get the Most Marketing Bang Out of Blog Commenting

Commenting on blogs (and in forums) is one of the most effective ways to bring traffic to your site/blog. But, have you ever taken the time to assess how to go about it to make it really effective. For example, should you post to many blogs, or frequent a few high traffic ones?

For about the last month, I’ve made a concerted effort to implement blog commenting as part of my marketing strategy. I try to do a certain number of comments per day (5). It usually doesn’t work out that way, but as I used to practically never leave comments anywhere, I’ve made a marked improvement. I’m anxious to see the results over time.

“Old School” Internet Marketing: Whatever Happened to Banner Impressions?

It's my day to post over at BloggingTips.com. As I announced in last Wednesday's post, A Day in the Life of an SEO Writer, I'm a regular contributor to this blog now.

Today I reminisce about how complicated internet marketing has become; I long for simpler times.

Remember when banner impressions were all the rage? I rarely, if ever, read about this anymore. Now there is social media, long-tail keywords and keyword density to worry about. Whatever happened to simply updating your site/blog with relevant content -- nothing more, nothing less?
