"Pull the Friggin' Trigger!"

I was talking to a brilliant friend last night. I mean, this guy is off-the-charts smart. He wants to start an internet business. He's been planning it for six months or so and is extremely motivated. But, he hasn't started yet.

I kept trying to get him to tell me what's holding him back. He kept talking around it, making excuses, explaining, etc. I finally said to him, "Just pull the friggin' trigger already!" This is a phrase I picked up from Christine at SelfMadeChick.com. I love this phrase because it's exactly what so many who want to start this, that or the other needs to do.

If you want to make money online in 2009 as a blogger, freelance writer, affiliate marketer -- whatever -- stop talking about it, worrying about it, planning it and researching it. Just do it already! You will make mistakes, it won't be easy and it will definitely test your nerves, but if you never START, you'll never get to overcome your mistakes, learn from them and move on. Mistakes are the foundation of success. Get started so you can begin making them and achieve successs that much sooner.

That's my advice as we end the year 2008.

I've had a lot of professional and personal highs and lows this year. I'm glad to see the end of 2008, mainly for personal reasons. I look forward to 2009 for professional reasons. Happy New Year everybody. Be safe and be happy.

New Site for Freelance Writers to Make Money

Yesterday, I was conversing via email with fellow freelance writer Jacob Malewitz, and he brought up the subject of a relatively new site where freelance writers can make money.

DailyArticle.com: A Good Place for Freelance Writers to Sell Content?

I’d run across this site a few months ago in my web surfing, but dismissed it because as I wrote to Jacob, “I tend to stay away from those sites -- with what I charge [as an experienced freelance writer], it would be a waste of my time to compete with those who are willing to write 500-words for $8.00.”

But, Jacob opened my eyes and proved to me that this just might be a good site for freelance writers -- especially new ones who want to know what it feels like to actually sell something (it’s a grand, grand feeling I still get a kick out of).

Why New Freelance Writers May Want to Check Out DailyArticle.com

One of the most frustrating things when you are just starting out as a freelance writer is landing that first client, completing that first job and seeing funds hit your PayPal account (ie, getting paid).

Once you experience actually getting paid for your work as a freelance writer, you feel official -- it’s like, “Yeah, I CAN make a living doing this!” It’s an amazing feeling. Sites like DailyArticle can make you “official” long before you land repeat, specific clients. They can even lead to repeat clients.

How DailyArticle.com Works

The site works very similar to Constant-Content ONLY. Jacob had the following to say about it, “They are much like Constant-Content, just newer, and you get a better rate for your articles. They accept just about everything, but unlike Constant-Content the articles are for ALL rights, not just USAGE or UNIQUE rights. That turns off some writers.”

What is this Usage and Unique rights? There are many different kinds of rights associated with freelance writing. In this case, what it basically means is that you sell all rights to the article when you post it to DailyArticle. Following is their official copyright policy.

“Upon verified purchase, full rights to the materials purchased are transferred to the purchaser. Upon purchase, the purchaser has the right to use the content in any way, including but not limited to publishing, distributing, reproducing, and amending the materials to suit the purchaser's needs. The content becomes the intellectual property of the purchaser.” [DailyArticle.com]

Freelance Writers: Price Your Articles Right for Them to Sell

This is one reason I don’t like sites like this for freelance writers is because if you don’t set your price high enough, then you wind up selling a 500-word article (and all rights to it) for mere pennies. On the other hand, if you do set your price high enough, then it likely won’t sell. And by high, I’m not talking a whole bunch of money either.

$15-$30 Article?

So, why would I recommend DailyArticle? Jacob emailed me the following, and it gave me pause. He wrote, “Actually, while many articles just won't sell, and some are priced low, I have sold several pieces for upwards of $30. My highest sale was $35. But my average is around $15 an article . . .”

While this is certainly not a king’s ransom, it beats the $3 per article article writing gigs that many new freelance writers (especially SEO writers) get sucked into thinking that this is where they have to start.

Freelance Writers Can Get Paid Even When There are No “Clients”

DailyArticle and sites like it (eg, Constant-Content.com, AssociatedContent.com) are places for freelance writers to still get paid even when there are no “clients.” And, many times these can lead to more lucrative assignments? How?

Let’s say your specialty is insurance and you write a lot of insurance articles. Once a purchaser gets to know your work (your articles), they may request your services outside of the site. This is how relationships are born -- and freelance writing careers start.

So mosey on over to DailyArticle.com. While you’re sitting around waiting for “real clients,” you can start feeling official as a freelance writer before you even land your first one.

FREELANCE WRITER CAUTION: I just have to add that while I think sites like DailyArticle.com are great for newbies who want to get their feet wet and experience what it feels like to actually sell something, or for more experienced freelance writers who wants to pick up some extra cash during dry spells, it is NOT (in my opinion) the way to make a real living as a freelance writer.

To make good money as a freelance writer, you need to find your own clients. That means constantly marketing.

How Weekend Blogging Can Increase Your Freelance Writing Success

I've been having an incredible run of success in my freelance writing lately. I targeted a new niche -- SEO writing -- that's taken off amazingly. You can read about that here.

I published my 8th ebook that's been my fastest selling one to date. And, my blog and website rankings are spiking.

Get More Weekend Traffic for Your Website/Blog: How Weekend Blogging Can Increase Your Freelance Writing Success

Why am I telling you all this? Because success inspires success. I'm so excited that I'm inspired to blog on the weekends, something I practically never do. But, as weekend traffic on blogs and websites is usually low, why do it?

A post at DoshDosh.com I read a few weeks ago inspired me to examine this, in spite of the downturn in traffic -- and make it successful. If you're serious about making money online by the way, DoshDosh is a "must favorite" site. It's one of the few I visit on a regular basis.

The one tip I've found to be incredibly true in this post over at DoshDosh is commenting on blogs.

Maki (DoshDosh webmaster) writes: "While many blogs don’t update during the weekend, you can still comment on the ones that do. Focus on those with more traffic and try to be the first few to leave a comment. Make your comment relevant and you’re likely to receive some visitors from others who visit the same blog."

I spent a couple of hours last night posting comments to some blogs and just before I logged off, checked my PayPal account one last time. At 1:20am what did I find -- an ebook order.

Now, can this be attributed to my late-night blogging efforts? Who knows. But, what I do know is that most of my orders are received during daylight hours. A late-night order is unusual. So ...

On Monday, I'll give some specific tips on "late-night blogging" to help you increase your income. I've been doing it for the last few weeks, and have seen some definite results.

The Dangers of Forums for Freelance Writers

Forums can be dangerous places for freelance writers, for a myriad of reasons. But, the number one reason is that they are time killers.

What Housekeeping Can Teach You about Freelancing

I got up this morning, made the bed, folded two baskets of laundry, put another load in the dryer, cooked breakfast and washed the dishes. Total time: About 45 minutes. I did all of this before I started my workday.

My point?

When I get up in the morning, I’m on a mission. I usually have a list of things I want to get to during the day, and from the time my feet hit the floor, I’m conscious of not wasting time.

While some make think this is a bit regimented, it really isn’t – once it became a habit.

You see, I can’t stand a dirty house – I’m not a neat freak, but I do keep a pretty clean house. I could easily spend 14 or 15 hours a day at my computer – but, I do have a family that I have to devote time to, I’m a runner, so I have to make time for that, and I’m a freelance writer – which encompasses a lot (eg, writing ebooks, producing seminars, updating my blog and website, etc.).

Women – and I don’t mean this to be a sexist statement at all – are natural multi-taskers. For example, while my breakfast was cooking, I was washing up the few dishes in the sink.

When my fiancé cooks, he doesn’t do this. He leaves all the dirty dishes and the containers from whatever he’s used to prepare the meal to clean up last. I stay away from the kitchen when he cooks because I can’t stand to look at the unruliness of the space.

I clean and put away things as I cook.

Applying this type of regimentation to your freelance career will ensure that you use each day to the max. So, what does all of this have to do with forums?

Many freelancers lurk in them for hours on end – wasted hours that could have been spent on income-producing tasks.

“But,” you may be thinking, “I learn a lot in the forums.”

My response: Fine. But go to them to find the answer to a question you have, and then leave. Don’t get lost in threads and/or, get sucked in to contributing to threads to the point where you lose big chunks of time.

Time is your most valuable commodity as a freelance writer. As I’ve said in many, many articles in the past – time is money – and this is especially true when you are a freelancer.

Now, I’m not saying don’t contribute to a forum. I love forums and probably wouldn’t know half of what I do know if I didn’t spend some time in them. But, I consciously limit my time in them, and follow a few rules to keep me on track.

Rules for Forum Lurking

Plan Ahead: As in, schedule some forum time into your work day/ work week. This way, you have a defined time that doesn’t take away from something else you could/should be doing.

Limit Contributions: The very nature of forums is to share information. But, limit the amount of time you spend sharing. Answering one question can take an hour or more, if you answer it thoroughly.

I get a lot of questions from readers of my blog, ebooks and website, but I structure how and when I answer them. If it’s a question I get a lot, I simply provide a link to previous answers. If it’s a relatively new question, I may save it and turn it into an article, posting in on my blog for all to benefit from. This way, I get double duty from the question – it serves as a blog post, and it answers the reader’s inquiry.

Research: Use forums as research. When you go to one, be there for a specific reason. Once you find the answer to what you’re looking for, leave.

Market: Forums are great for marketing. For example, if you’re promoting an ebook or your writing services, log on and answer a question – in detail – then provide a link in your signature to whatever you’re promoting (your website, ebook, seminar, etc.).

If you’re serious about making money as a freelance writer, you have to be ruthless with your time. Social networking outlets like forums can be great boosters to your career, but only when they are used in a defined manner, as outlined above.

How Naming Your Files Descriptively Can Lead to Cash

As Dan Rosandich, the featured interviewee in the latest edition of Inkwell Editorial's newsletter (published today) noted, getting noticed online is one of the things you can do to snag clients.

Learn web design yourself and don't let anyone do it for you. Because if you do, you immediately lose all control of the way you want it to look and how it should appear to potential clients. . . . Learn some HTML, it sounded complicated when I first began studying but I slowly became a freak / geek and developed a love / hate relationship with coding....it gets more interesting as you go along because you soon realize all the potential the web has to offer in getting you "out there" - - -

In keeping with this spirit, today's post is a simple tip I picked up a long time ago from some reading on how to get noticed online.

A Tip to Get You Noticed Online

When you name anything you upload -- files, photos, video, etc. give it a descriptive, meaningful name. For example, instead of name a picture photo1.jpg, name it, tips-on-freelance-writing.jpg, if that's what it's used for.

Why? Because when search engines crawl the web, they look for words that describe something. And, when they pick it up -- no matter what the file type (.jpg, .htm., etc.), it can still be picked up when people search for it. Note the following Google result when I typed in the phrase, "Freelance Writing Newletter".

BUT, as I have the phrase "Freelance Writing Newletter" as part of my naming mechanism, whenever someone types in that phrase to search for info, my newsletter is going to pop up in their results -- hopefully one day soon on page one :-).

Now, I sell ebooks. So, if they curiously open up my newsletter, read it, and like the content, they are likely to become a subscriber -- for possibly years to come. How likely do you think it will be that at some point in time they will purchase an ebook?
