5 Signs It's Time to Move Your Blog to Another Platform

Before we get to today's post, an announcement . . .

As of today, Inkwell Editorial's blog has moved from blogger to wordpress. My blog's home here will never be forgotten, as it's where I cut my teeth on this medium, which has brought me profound success. So, goodbye blogger, it's like ending a relationship with a lover that you still crave and adore, but realize it's time to move on. Following are some relationship rules that signal whether it's time to move your blog to another platform.

Signs It's Time to Move Your Blog to Another Platform

Relationship metaphors are perfect to judge whether it's time to move yoru blog to another platform. Because, just ike your significant other, you enter into a relationship when you blog. And, over time, that relationship will exhibit the ups, downs, joys and pains of any other type of relationship. Hence, should be assessed through the same lens.

Here goes. . . signs you and yoru blog need to find new relationships . . .

1. You shouldn't fight too much at home: If you yell, scream and roll your eyes, and bang your keyboard because of some glitch with your blog, it's time to move on.

2. Love is Freeing: If you're constantly frustated at your blog's limitations and find yourself wishing that it had that feature or this, then it's time to move on.

3. You Should Grow Closer Together Over Time, Not Further Apart: Piggybacking on the last point, your blog's capability should grow with you, not inhibit you.

4. Love is Faithful: Even though you may crave all the bells and whistles of another blogging platform, if you find that you've actually tried out another one (ie, cheated on your primary blog), then it's definitely time to move on.

5. I Can't Stand the Sight of You! If everytime you look at your blog you feel that it's lacking, it's time to move on.

Hasta luego, mi amor. Tal vez en el futuro, encontremos otro vez. Un beso y abrazo muy fuerte por todo!

Visit me in our new new home at http://inkwelleditorial.wordpress.com. We start off with a bang in today's post, entitled, Are You Stunting the Growth of Your Online Business?

Blog Posting Rates: 6 Things to Consider Before Lowering Your Rate

The post I wrote today over at BloggingTips.com, my regular Wednesday blogging gig, was inspired by yesterday's post here.

Blogging for Pay: How to Know When/If You Should Lower Your Rates

The topic is blogging rates. In yesterday's post, I answered a question an SEO article writer sent me regarding clients who wanted her to lower her rates. That post was entitled How to Respond to Clients Who Want You to Change Your Rates for Steady Work.

On the heels of that, one of my recently acquired clients that I write blog posts for requsted a lower rate on an ongoing blog posting gig. So, I thought it was a good time to share the guidelines I follow when trying to determine if /when I should lower my blog posting rates. Read this post at BloggingTips.com: Blog Posting Rates: 6 Things to Consider Before Lowering Your Rate.

How to Respond to Clients Who Want You to Change Your Rates for Steady Work

Last week, I received the following email from a freelance writer who bought my ebook on SEO writing, was landing clients at one rate (after only a couple of weeks of marketing), and wondered if she should go lower for this one client who promised steady work.

She wrote:

Hi Yuwanda, I received the following response to one of my marketing emails from an SEO company. I thought I was pretty bargain basement at $20 when I have no experience. I've been marketing for a couple of weeks, and I've already gotten a couple of clients so far (emphasis added) so I'm not willing to work for these rates; I don't think I need to. But I'm wondering how I should respond to him at this point? Could he be just testing to see if I'll bite? Thanks BL

POTENTIAL CLIENT'S EMAIL TO BL

Hello BL, Thanks for getting in touch with me. We are currently working with a writer team that offers a lower price. ($10 per 500 word article). So far we have been happy with the quality of the work. If you can lower your fees we might be able to send you some work in the future. Thanks

SEO Article Writing Scams: One Freelancer's Nightmare

Before we get to today's entry, a little reminder: The newest issue of Inkwell Editorial's newsletter was published yesterday. The leading story in this issue is how to make $75,000 to $100,000/year as an SEO writer. I outline 8 keys to my success since I started in this niche, in hopes that it will help others. You can read it here free. Subscribe to receive future issues.

Now on to today's post . . .

Freelance SEO writer Roy de Silva sent the following (very long) comment to my blog post entitled, WARNING: New Scam Job Site Targeting Freelancers. I break up the comment by adding some tips on how to prevent this from happening to you.

The Biggest Cheat There Ever Was, Is And Will Be - Elliott Leee

I am sure what I am going to say now will shake off the socks of every content writer present in the world. This is the bitterest experience anyone can ever have, so be warned. I have been mightily cheated by Elliott Leee, and I call upon everyone to be very vigilant about this person. Here's my story.

I am a freelance writer and this Elliott Leee contacted me through one of them (job site). His username is richuser2008 there (later I found out he has one more username richuser2009 also, on the same site). Okay, he contracted me to do 100 articles in 2 days for him. The articles were of 500 words each, and on various topics. The payment decided for them was $600.

Normally, freelance sites allow for escrow, and I prefer that mode, but this Elliott Leee said he will not escrow because he didn't have funds. Still, I needed the money, so I accepted the work. I have a kid aged 1.5 years and parents aged 61 and 73 years to look after. So I accepted. That was my mistake number one.
***********************

My Take: The poster is right, this was a huge mistake. What should have clued him in: (i) the large order; (ii) the crazy turnaround time (2 days for 100 articles – come on!); and (iii) the buyers inability to escrow (ie, follow prescribed guidelines as outlined by the job posting sites).

Scammers often use job sites for two reasons: (i) it’s the easiest way to target a lot of freelance writers quickly; and (ii) a lot of writers who use these sites are accustomed to working for pennies (no knock to the freelancer). Writers who charge more tend to stay away from sites like this (I know I do), or at least not waste their time responding to orders like this one.

Read the rest of this extensive tale here -- with more valuable lessons thrown in. If you troll the web looking for work, this is a must-read.

8 Keys to Making $6,000 to $8,000/Month as an SEO Writer

Two things in today's hurried post.

Yesterday, I promised to write about marketing. I did this over at BloggingTips.com today in a post entitled To Achieve Blogging Success, Grow Some Marketing Cojones.

As for the title of today's post, that's taken from the new issue of Inkwell Editorial's newsletter. The leading story in this issue is how to make $75,000 to $100,000/year as an SEO writer. I outline 8 keys to my success since I started in this niche, in hopes that it will help others.

I simply don't have time to answer all emails personally, so I'm hoping this will shed some light on what I attribute my success to. Usually I don't post the newsletter link, as the newsletter only goes to subscribers. But, you can read this issue, and all previous issues here.

Happy hump day, and let's meet here again tomorrow where I'll post about how NOT to get scammed when taking on SEO writing jobs. One freelancer's sad tale has a lesson for us all.

This day has been an absolutely bear. So I'm glad to be logging off -- I need a friggin' drink!

Writers: How to Ask for More Money & Get It (3 Case Studies)

Week before last, I had a helluva week. So, I'm delivering the posts I promised from then this week. If you wanna know what's on tap the rest of the week, see the end of this post. Today's topic is about money, as in how to ask for -- and get -- more of it as a freelance writer.

During my busy time a couple of weeks ago, I had three occasions where I had to confront the “rate question.” Lessons can be learned from each of them. Some reinforced long-ago lessons learned; some taught me new ones.

Here’s how to handle the following rate question and all of its variations, ie, “How much do you charge?” or “How much should I charge?” or "What are your freelance writing rates?"

Case Study #1: How I Asked for More Money and Got It When the Parameters of the Project Changed Midstream

One was with the client I wrote about in the post How to Handle Clients Who Leave Projects "Hanging in the Wind". In essence, the client was throwing more work my way and the project was progressing as we had discussed.

When this happens, it costs you money, so you have every right to ask for more money. I’m usually not a real stickler on charging clients for every little thing. Writing is a creative endeavor, so I understand that every teensy, weensy element can’t be covered in a proposal. So, some things I’ll just let go. But, you have to have parameters.

This reinforced the following lesson: Make air tight proposals. And this includes setting your fee schedule to cover wiggle room in your proposal. In the fee that I’d quoted this client, I’d built in a certain number of hours for consultation, so that if the project “runs over” (and a lot of them will, especially with sales copy), then you’re still covered. And by being covered, I mean that your average hourly rate evens out to what you’ve set as an annual salary for yourself.

To keep it really simple, if your goal is to make $100K/year and you calculate using a 50 week year (build in two weeks time off), then you need to make $2,000/week. At 35 hours, that means you have to bill roughly $58/hour. [$100,000 / 50 (weeks/year) = $2,000 week (target salary). $2,000 / 35 hours per work week = $57.14]

Takeaway Lesson: Learn how to write tight proposals. This is why clients who leave projects hanging in the wind can cost you. BUT, if you learn how to write tight proposals, they don’t necessarily have to.

Tight proposals include listing the major details of the project, your specific duties, turnaround time, payment terms, number of changes, etc. This way, if there’s every a problem, you can always point back to the specifics as they were outlined initially. This will keep you and the client on the same page.

By the way, I handled this client by simply asking for more money. He simplified his requests and agreed to pay more if the project ran over. In the end, it worked out to both of our satisfaction, which is always the end goal.

Click here to read two more case studies like this.

Tomorrow's Post: Learn How to Think Like a Marketer.

FYI, tomorrow's post was inspired by a great email I got when I turned on my computer this morning. A college student who bought my ebook this past weekend has already landed 4 clients! My mouth dropped. But, what really excited me was that he goes on to say that he thinks he can replace his income and be a FT writer. Now THAT'S making an impact on somebody's life (it made my whole day). He wrote me the following:

SEO Work Success!!!‏ (The title of the email)

Hi Yuwanda,

I just wanted to share with you my story, briefly. I am currently a 5th year senior in college, and I’ve been running a (failing) copywriting business for the last year, trying to get work from local businesses in the area. I stumbled across your website last week and bought your eBook because it seemed interesting (and was only 10 bucks). After reading it, I decided to give SEO writing a try.

This afternoon (Monday), I sent out 24 emails to SEO companies requesting work after setting up an SEO page on my website (he listed his website) . Within an HOUR, I had one email requesting samples, and a phone call requesting my services! Within twelve hours, I had FOUR companies asking me to write for them!!! (emphasis added) I’m officially a writer now!

And, because I serve tables for a living, replacing my income won’t be that hard! By the end of this week, I should know whether or not I can go freelance FULL TIME! (emphasis added) And I just wanted to send you an emphatic “thank you” for providing me the blueprint for this. The guy that called me today said I was “in the right profession” right now. I have a profession! And I don’t graduate for another month!

I am terribly thankful that this is working, and I can’t wait to see what other work I can dig up this week. Thank you so much for providing direction for my freelance writing! If there’s any way I can repay you, let me know!

TM

3 Reasons Freelancers Thrive in a Recession

This post continues on the ideas expressed in last Wednesday's post about why a recession is a great time to start a freelance writing career.

I was a little light on details. As I had I had some free time over the weekend, I took the time to flesh the topic out for today's post.

To repeat myself a bit, what started me to thinking about this was "unofficial" recession we're in and a conversation I had with a girlfriend who works in corporate America got me to thinking a lot about why some are scared (9-5ers), and why others aren't (freelancers). The title and text came to me in a flash.

To read the exact conversation I had with my six-figure earning girlfriend, read this post at BloggingTips.com: The Mind of an Entrepreneur versus The Mind of a 9-5'er. The following expands on those thoughts.

Freelance Writing Job: URGENT Need for SEO Article Writers ($15 each)

Where's Yuwanda? Snowed under! I need two or three writers who can do 2-3 of the articles listed below by 5pm EST today. $15/each paid via PayPal on Monday.

Following are the keyword phrases:

Edmonton Wedding Photographer (500 words)
Edmonton Bridal Fantasy (words)
Edmonton Bridal Fair (500 words)
Edmonton Limo (500 words)
Calcium Chloride Supplier (500 words)
Calcium Chloride (500 words)
Calcium Chloride Pellets (500 words)
Liquid Calcium Chloride (500 words)

There’s no particular topic matter; they can be on any subject about the phrase you want. BUT the keyword phrase must be used at least 10 times in the copy (client likes a 3-5% density, and using the keyword 10 times in a 500-word article will achieve that).

I would prefer two people to do four each, but if you can only do one or two, that's fine.

If you don’t understand SEO writing, eg, keyword density, keyword phrase, etc., please don’t respond as I unfortunately have no time to explain it. I need to turn these around quickly.

You MUST have a PayPal account, as that's how I pay. Remember, you will be paid for these on Monday (could be this weekend, as I invoice on Fridays and clients usually deposit the funds in my account on Saturday or Sunday).

TO Apply: Send all correspondence to info at InkwellEditorial.com. Put "SEO Article Writer" in the subject line so I can get to it quickly.

HIRING COMPETENT SEO WRITERS: FYI, I'm in the market for up to 10 more freelance SEO writers I can work with on a regular basis who can do 20-40 articles/week. My business is expanding rapidly, so I'm looking for skilled, RELIABLE writers. Most of the work is 500-word SEO articles, and the pay is $15-$25/article (most are $15). Most need to be turned around in 48 hours. You'll usually be given batches of 5-10 articles at a time.

I'm also looking for freelancers who can write press release and do blog postings, usually 5-10 posts/week of 150-250 words. Please send me your rates for each of these services as I'm just in the info gathering stage on these.

FYI, did you catch the latest blog postings? While you're here, why not catch up on some reading. Some really good info can be found in the two most recent posts that are releveant to the times we're in now, ie, Why Freelance Writing Jobs are Plentiful Right Now and Why a Recession is a Great Time to Start a Freelance Writing Career.

Normal posting will resume next Tuesday. What a week it's been -- whew!

Why a Recession is a Great Time to Start a Freelance Writing Career

My post today is over at BloggingTips.com. It's entitled, The Mind of an Entrepreneur versus The Mind of a 9-5’er. This "unofficial" recession we're in and a conversation I had with a girlfriend who works in corporate America got me to thinking a lot about why some are scared (9-5ers), and why others aren't (freelancers).

I don't think there's ever been a better time than RIGHT NOW to start a freelance writing career. As I mentioned in yesterday's post, Why Freelance Writing Jobs are Plentiful Right Now, there's so much work out there right now it's frightening. My calender is filled to the gills! So, check out the post and let me know your thoughts.

What I Learned from Talking to an Internet Marketing Firm Executive

Freelance Writing Tip of the Day: I was talking to an executive at an internet marketing firm in Ann Arbor, Michigan yesterday. I queried them a few days ago and lo and behold, someone actually called. (Usually, I get responses via email). Anyway, we wound up having a nice chat about the dearth of freelance SEO writers.

She said they do a lot of stuff in house, but had been looking for a freelance SEO writer they can outsource stuff to on a regular basis. She said they've had trouble finding skilled writers in this area, and was happy to receive my email.

Two things to take away from this:

(i) Market regularly. Even though I have so much work that my days are 18 hours right now, I still market. Where I used to send out 50 or 100 queries a week, I'm now down to 10-20. Work will come in months later, which means your pipeline will always be full. This is why many freelancers live a feast and famine existence. They stop marketing when they get busy.

When you do this, you have to ramp up again (eg, start marketing) and wait for the work to flow in (hence, a dry spell). As I've said before, since I started SEO writing, I've only about two days where I didn't have any work. That's because I'm constantly marketing, which I talk about in this ebook. (Sorry about all the ebook promotion, but it's just so darn relevant!)

(ii) Learn the basics of SEO. It's still a new, burgeoning field and you have a real chance to establish yourself before it gets too crowded.

Can you really make $2,000/week as an SEO writer?

Of course, my ebook can tell you everything you need to get started as an SEO writer. It's not as hard as you think, and the work comes fast and furious. This week I'll be billing close to $2,000 in JUST SEO writing work -- and that doesn't include work that's already done that I'm waiting on payment for, or projects that are on tap.

Okay, enough about that. Below are the freelance writing job leads from Constant-Content.com I promised yesterday. Happy humpty dumpty day everybody.

Why Freelance Writing Jobs Are Plentiful Right Now

As I mentioned in last Thursday's post, today I was supposed to talk about how I negotiated with clients on three different occasions last week (the rate/fee question), and managed to come away doing ok. But alas, I've been slammed this week. I mean SLAMMED!

Last week it seemed that all of my troublesome clients came out of the woodwork, as I talked about here. This week, it's raining new clients AND old clients with multiple new projects. I'm literally swamped. My work days have started at 6am and ran right through until midnight or 1am the past two days, and it's gonna be that way this entire week.

I say all this to say that I'm going back to a series of quick tips this week, and will pick up with my usual in-depth posting style next week, as I only have 15 -30 minutes to devote to blogging the next few days.

So, four things I want to tell you today.

1. FREELANCE WRITING JOB LEADS FROM ASSOCIATED CONTENT

Last week, I made a quick $45 with Associated Content (AC) for two articles. How? Well, they've been posting a lot of pretty good paying "Calls for Content" lately. I did one article on How to Write a Small Business Plan for $25 (about 45 minutes to write), and another on What All-in-One Printers Can Do For Small Business Owners for $20 (maybe 20 minutes to write).

What are Calls for Content? It's basically a request they send out for certain topics they want you to write about. The pay ranges from $0 (just performance payments) on up to $25, which is the most I've ever seen one for. I perk up when I see $20 and $25, because usually they only have to be 250 to 400 words, and because I'm an SEO writer, I can churn these out like lightning (especially if they have to do with business).

I have claimed four more to write that are due on Thursday, and none are more than 400 words. Each pays $20 and I'd be surprised if it took me more than an hour and a half to do all of them. So, if you're not familiar with AC or haven't given them a look in a while, cruise on over. It could be worth your while.

Following are a few available ones as of this posting.

Your Pregnancy and the Dentsit ($20): This content may or may not be published on DentalPlans.com. If published on that site, it will appear with your byline and a link to your AC profile page, but it will not be eligible for performance payments.Importance of proper nutrition, effects on unborn child, loss of calcium, radiation, medications and options for treating a tooth ache when pregnant. Word Count: 250 to 350 words. Keywords: pregnancy dentist, pregnancy dental x-rays, pregnancy dental careAlso read the Dental Plans Writer Guidelines.

Caring for Someone with Parkinson's Disease ($25): This content may be published on Disaboom.com. If your content is published, it will appear with your byline (or your AC pen name if you've provided a professional one) but it will not be eligible for performance payments. Your Assignment: Interview the following AC CP who has Parkinson's disease. She has agreed to be interviewed for this article. Contact her via her profile page. The writer guidelines below will explain more about the assignment.

How to Hold an Estate Sale ($25): This content may be published on a new IAC Web site (TBA). If published, it will appear with your AC pen name (as long as it is professional). It is not eligible for performance payments. Word Count: 750 to 1,000. Keyphrases: estate sale (5% density and used in first paragraph); local estate sales. Notes from IAC editors: Cover the basics on what to sell, how to price and how to advertise. Assume that there are no legal issues preventing the estate sale, but make mention of what happens if the money from the sale will be assigned to a trust. (NOTE: This is kind of a long one; they usually only request 250-500 words). But, hey, if you have the time and the interest . . . )

NOTE: You must be an AC Content Producer (CP) to write these. Don't worry, it's free to sign up, and you can do it and start writing immediately.

View all AC Calls for Content here. Learn more about Calls for Content here.

2. BLOGGING JOB JOB LEAD FROM THE RHYTHIM OF WRITE

This job lead comes from Deborah Dera of therhythmofwrite.com. She left a comment on my blog last Thursday, so I clicked over to her blog, and lo and behold, she had a great writeup on a paid blogging gig site I'd never heard of. So, check out this post on her blog about PayU2Blog.com. You may be able to pick up some nice pocket change like Deborah has.

Thanks Deborah for the tip!

3. Tomorrow I'll pass along a ton of leads from Constant-Content (CC). If my experience this week and the emails I'm getting from CC are any indication, clients are coming out of the woodworks these days. There's so much frelance writing work out there right now it's insane -- especially for SEO writers! My inbox and phone have been blown up with client request for proposals and outright signing on the dotted line.

I'll share a quick tip from an interesting conversation I had with an SEO internet marketing firm exec tomorrow. And finally. . .

4. This blog is in a contest, and we came through the first round a winner! John Hewitt of Poewar.com, in honor of March Madness, put together a very unique contest entitled March Writing Blog Madness! The purpose: "A field of 32 blogs about writing will gather to compete to see who is the best." Read more about it here. And read how we fared in the first round of the contest here.

It's a great way to discover new freelance writing blogs, and to get in-depth information on which ones you may want to consider becoming regular readers of.

I have two more hours to put in before getting some shut-eye and getting up and doing it all again. Until tomorrow.

Sincerely,
Yuwanda Black, Publisher

How to Handle Clients Who Leave Projects "Hanging in the Wind"

When clients leave projects half finished, or hanging in the wind as I like to call it, it costs you money. Following is what I'm going through with a current client – and how I’m handling it.

As a side note, if you’re a regular reader of this blog you may think, “Wow, she complains about her clients a lot.” Like any other relationship, I have my trying times with clients, but for the most part they are nice, easy and very pleasant to work with.

I recount my difficulties here so that others can learn from them, and so that I can receive feedback from how other freelances have handled this situation. That being said, here’s my story.

Placing the Bid and Landing the Project

This client contacted me about a week and a half ago and asked me to bid on a project. They wanted three pages of SEO-optimized copy for a technical recruiting website. I sent in my bid and it was accepted on a Friday.

I told him that I could have the pages back to him the following Wednesday, if they provided me with requested materials (eg, client questionnaire, previous copy, etc.).

They sent everything in a timely manner (except the keyword list), and I sent the copy a day early, a Tuesday. I knew we would have to go another pass because the client had yet to decide on his main keywords, which I asked for when I sent in the copy on that Tuesday. I thought it would take a day or so for my client to get it to me.

After I sent him the copy, I didn’t hear anything for three days, at which time I emailed him to remind him what I needed and to ask when he thought we could wrap the project up. He emailed me back 24 hours later – and it wasn’t what I expected.

Read the rest here.

What's Coming Up Next Week

Tuesday’s Post: Three times this week I’ve dealt with the fee/rate/cost question. In Tuesday’s post, I’ll detail how I got what I wanted all three times.

Next Wednesday: I haven't decided what I'm going to talk about on BloggingTips.com on Wednesday (this is my cool weekly blogging gig). Something will come to me; it always does.

Next Thursday: A sad tale from a freelancer who got scammed on GetAFreelancer. I’ll give some warning signs to look out for so it doesn’t happen to you.

Yippee -- the weekend’s almost here! Over the weekend, want to learn how to make at least $250/day writing simple 500-word SEO articles? Read how here.

Don't forget to check out the freelance writing job leads below. One more thing. I rarely ask this, but if you like this blog, send it to a friend (or 2 or 3). I've seen a spike in traffic lately and am enjoying the buzz. So to those who've already recommended this spot, a big ole thanks.

Does Social Media Marketing Really Work for Most Blogs?

Today's post was supposed to be about a client who likes to leave projects "hanging in the wind," so to speak. I'll do that one tomorrow. I forgot that I post over at BloggingTips.com on Wednesday, and had another topic in mind that's been taking up space in my head for today's post. So, what's been cloggin' my noggin? Well social media marketing and freelance writing blogs.

Obviously, this blog is all about the business of freelance writing. And, even though I post to social media sites like Digg, Propeller and StumbleUpon, I just don't see much traffic from those sites. My post today, Does Social Media Marketing Really Work for Most Blogs?, goes into detail about why I don't think social media sites are a good bet for promoting freelance writing blogs.

I'd love to hear your take on the subject. FYI, don't forget to view the freelance writing job leads below.

Hope you're having a lovely hump day!

How to Handle Clients Who Cost You Money

Today’s post is another update on a client I first wrote about here. I swear, it’s like all of my troublesome clients have come out of the woodworks lately.

Just to do a quick recap, this was a client who owns endless websites. He hired me to write copy for 25 of them initially. Then, we were to keep going and going and going.

In our last interaction, I had about 30 pages of content to turn into him. A couple of days before I was to turn in the copy, he sent me an email telling me to halt production. Now, as he had already paid upfront, I wasn’t upset about this. What upset me was the fact that this client has a tendency to change his mind in the middle of a project.

After trudging through the project (copy I didn’t particularly enjoy writing, as I kvetched about here), my immediate thought was, “What now?”

Read the rest here.

Tomorrow’s Post: In tomorrow’s post, I’ll detail the story of a client who has a tendency to leave projects hanging in the wind – eg, complete part of it, then wait days or weeks before getting on with successive parts. This costs you money. How do you handle this – stay tuned?

One thing you can say about freelancing -- it’s never dull! (Don't forget to view job listings below!)
