How to Convince Clients That You’re the Right Writer for the Job

A running theme through a lot of the emails I receive from freelance writers – especially those who are just starting out – is a lack of confidence.

Whether it’s the, “I didn’t know what they meant by that,” in response to a client query, or “What should I charge for this job?” in putting together a proposal, the underlying problem is not a lack of knowledge or the price that should be charged, it’s the lack of confidence in the freelance writer.

If You Don’t Believe In Yourself, Why Should the Client?

Confidence is a must as a freelance writer. You’ll not only need it as far as your writing ability is concerned, but you’ll need it to price jobs, to go after assignments you may not be “qualified for”, to say NO to jobs that pay too little, to stand up to other freelance writers who wonder why you charge X. Read the rest here.

Freelance Writers: How to Prioritize Your Schedule to Make More Money

In order to live up to the title of this post, I’m going to tell you a story. I hope you find it interesting enough to stick around for the lesson – because there’s definitely one to heed.

Freelance Writers: What It’s Like to Live in Hell!

I was supposed to launch Inkwell Editorial’s affiliate program today, but unfortunately, I’m not ready yet. I need more time (until Tuesday, Sept. 9th).

To explain a bit, I’ve had a hell of a summer – from overseeing the blog design to equipment problems (all last week), nothing has gone right. And I realize, it’s due to success, which is a double-edged sword.

A sample of my hell? I had to rent a computer last week because mine had to be serviced. Do you know what it’s like NOT to have access to all of your files – especially if you have as many as I do? Remember, I’ve been freelancing since 1993. I have client files that go back to then, not to mention my own files (ebooks, financial records, idea files, etc.). It’s been a nightmare!

In the midst of all of this I’ve been keeping up with client work, trying to stay on an ebook publishing schedule (new ebook published), and trying desperately to finish the marketing material for affiliates. It’s just been overwhelming.

My sister said to me, “If Microsoft can delay their software rollouts, why can’t you delay your affiliate program rollout?” Aaaahhhhh, a moment of sanity in the madness. It hit me, “why couldn’t I?”

Why a Recession is a Great Time to Start a Freelance Writing Career

My post today is over at BloggingTips.com. It's entitled, The Mind of an Entrepreneur versus The Mind of a 9-5’er. This "unofficial" recession we're in and a conversation I had with a girlfriend who works in corporate America got me to thinking a lot about why some are scared (9-5ers), and why others aren't (freelancers).

I don't think there's ever been a better time than RIGHT NOW to start a freelance writing career. As I mentioned in yesterday's post, Why Freelance Writing Jobs are Plentiful Right Now, there's so much work out there right now it's frightening. My calender is filled to the gills! So, check out the post and let me know your thoughts.

What I Learned from Talking to an Internet Marketing Firm Executive

Freelance Writing Tip of the Day: I was talking to an executive at an internet marketing firm in Ann Arbor, Michigan yesterday. I queried them a few days ago and lo and behold, someone actually called. (Usually, I get responses via email). Anyway, we wound up having a nice chat about the dearth of freelance SEO writers.

She said they do a lot of stuff in house, but had been looking for a freelance SEO writer they can outsource stuff to on a regular basis. She said they've had trouble finding skilled writers in this area, and was happy to receive my email.

Two things to take away from this:

(i) Market regularly. Even though I have so much work that my days are 18 hours right now, I still market. Where I used to send out 50 or 100 queries a week, I'm now down to 10-20. Work will come in months later, which means your pipeline will always be full. This is why many freelancers live a feast and famine existence. They stop marketing when they get busy.

When you do this, you have to ramp up again (eg, start marketing) and wait for the work to flow in (hence, a dry spell). As I've said before, since I started SEO writing, I've only about two days where I didn't have any work. That's because I'm constantly marketing, which I talk about in this ebook. (Sorry about all the ebook promotion, but it's just so darn relevant!)

(ii) Learn the basics of SEO. It's still a new, burgeoning field and you have a real chance to establish yourself before it gets too crowded.

Can you really make $2,000/week as an SEO writer?

Of course, my ebook can tell you everything you need to get started as an SEO writer. It's not as hard as you think, and the work comes fast and furious. This week I'll be billing close to $2,000 in JUST SEO writing work -- and that doesn't include work that's already done that I'm waiting on payment for, or projects that are on tap.

Okay, enough about that. Below are the freelance writing job leads from Constant-Content.com I promised yesterday. Happy humpty dumpty day everybody.

SEO Writer: One Freelance Writer's Success Story

Today’s update is on SEO Mary, which I’ve been promising practically all week. I’ve been so busy lately that I didn’t even query Mary. Sweet soul that she is, I think she’s come to feel some responsibility to readers of her foray into SEO writing, so she took it upon herself to email me.

Even though I would have gotten around to it eventually, I’m glad she took the step. FYI, this is officially Part VII of this series. Read it from the beginning here.

Series Note: I had put an official end to this series at Part V. Obviously, it’s gone past that and may go a few more. I’ll always have a post on my blog when I’m going to post an update to the series.

Mary Lands a Client Who LOVES Her Work -- She writes:

Good afternoon, Yuwanda. I've been wanting to e-mail you with an update, but wanted to wait until I had definitive news -- and now I have it! Things are progressing well. I have a client who LOVES my work. I've written seven articles for him so far, and he's hoping to give me more soon. I know I should be marketing more but I'm going to be absolutely swamped with work over the next few weeks, because....

(Read the rest here)

Have a good weekend everybody. I'm feeling a little under the weather, so am knocking off early today to get some rest. Don't forget -- job leads are below.

How to Create an SEO Writing Niche: Question from a Reader

This week, I’ve received a few interesting inquiries from readers of this blog, so thought I’d answer them here the rest of the week, sharing feedback with all.

One freelancer has a question that would be of particular interest to beginners, while the other is wrestling with the dragon of success. Yet another has a blogging question, which I’ll cover tomorrow in my BloggingTips.com post.

Today’s Question from a Reader

QUESTION: Hi, Yuwanda: I recently purchased your E-book on SEO writing and I want to get started as an SEO writer. I have no professional writing experience or writing samples so I decided to go the the GAF (GetaFreelancer.com) website. I figured I might be able to gain some experience and write some material that I could use for samples.

One of the ads for a re-write included an actual article that they wanted re-written and submitted as a sample. The gentlemen contacted me, and said that my re-write was very good. I used that as a sample in a couple of other ads, one of whom also contacted me. So I’ve now written a few articles for $2 apiece and not making any money, but I’m learning a lot of things that I can use later when I’m ready to start marketing myself. I’m kind of stuck on creating a niche for myself.

My career has been primarily in accounting and purchasing, and I also have some non-professional experience with investing. I figured maybe if I marketed myself as a finance and investment expert. I’m not sure if purchasing for a government facility would have any marketability or not….do you have any ideas?? Also, where is the best place to find companies for a contact list? Do you just do searches on the internet for SEO companies?
Thanks, BL
*********

ANSWER: Basically, this reader’s question has to do with defining a niche for herself.

I say go with what you know and/or feel comfortable with. So, BL, as you have experience in accounting and purchasing, and you feel comfortable covering investment topics, I see two strong markets here: accounting and investing. I would focus my marketing efforts on these, which happen to be in higher-paying niches.

Marketing Plan I Propose for BL

First, even though these two categories could be married, I would separate them. You’ll get more work that way. Now, as for your marketing plan, if I were you, I’d do the following:

1) Put up a simple website with three to five article samples under each category. My professional profile page can be found here. SEO Mary followed it and she’s now doing great (I’ll update you on her Friday). Notice how the samples are listed under categories.

Even if you don’t have previously published samples, as I tell you in the ebook, simply create them. Write 3-5, 400-600 word articles and use them as samples.

2) Create Service Offerings: Which services do you want to provide? SEO articles, press releases, blog posts, forum posting, etc. Again, feel free to copy my page if you want – I don’t mind.

3) Create a Pricing Structure: Decide what you want to charge. And, remember, in the beginning, you’re probably going to be spending an hour to an hour and a half on your articles.

Once you get the hang of it, you should be able to cut that time in half, at least. So, if you work full time, create a structure you can live with. Because let me tell you, if you luck up and get a 20, 30 or 40 article order (as I did last week), it’s no fun sitting there doing them for $$5-$10 a piece. I wouldn’t even think about going below $15. I charge $25 for basic articles. I charge up to $50 or more for more technical research-intensive topics.

If you decide to go with accounting and investing, you should get $25 pretty easily. Whatever your pricing structure, set one you can live with for a year or so. That way, you can get some experience under your belt and then raise rates accordingly. Clients don’t like it when you raise rates too quickly, or too often.

4) Create a Basic Email Query: Use an email similar to the one I outline in the ebook. I wouldn’t spend any money in offline advertising, as you allude to in your question. SEO is Search Engine Optimization, an online marketing technique. So do Google searches. Use the technique I outline in the ebook. That should net you all the prospects – and clients – you will ever need.

I haven’t spent a cent on offline marketing to get my SEO clients. It’s all been done online. I outline a complete marketing plan in the ebook, the exact one I followed. That’s truly all I did, no more, no less. Do the same.

5) Stay Away from Sites Like GAF: Don’t do one more article for peanuts. I’m glad you got your feet wet, but please stay away from sites like that. You don’t have to have SEO writing experience to get started in this business. I didn’t even know what it was when I started, and was able to make almost 2K my first month alone once I figured out things like keyword density.
SEO MARY Update Coming on Friday!

I hope this answers your question. Give me an update, a la SEO Mary. Don’t forget, I’m going to update you on her on Friday. She’s doing terrific, I’m excited to report. And, not a minute too soon – as you’ll learn on Friday.

I had a monster project to get off my desk today, so no time to snoop for freelance writing jobs leads. I’ll have some leads for you tomorrow. I’m off to the track (marathon training season is in full swing!)

Tomorrow's Post: A newbie writes in about how to build his freelance credentials via blogging -- should he, how, guest posts -- I'll cover it all.

3 Reasons to Write for Low-Paying Online Sites

I contribute to AssociatedContent.com (AC) and eHow on a pretty regular basis; I’ve posted a couple of articles to Helium.

Regular readers of my blog and newsletter may wonder why I contribute to low-paying online sites like this when I earn more from my SEO and other freelance writing gigs. Well, there are three reasons. One was sitting in my inbox when I logged on this morning. It's what prompted this post. Read the rest here.

FYI, the latest edition of Inkwell Editorial's newsletter was published yesterday. What's inside? An interview with Author, Copywriter and Consultant Shel Horowitz.

Shel shares tips on how to market you freelance writing services on a shoe-string budget (he's written five books grassroots marketing); how he created multiple streams of income (writing, speaking, consulting) and more.

There is also a rundown of my $2K plus week (types of projects, what they consisted of and more). There's also a special offer just for newsletter subscribers. So subscribe to read this, and all previous, issues.

Today's post can be found at BloggingTips.com. Lately, the presidential race has had me in a boil (from Obama's speech to Rev Wright's YouTube video to the remark made by Geraldine Ferraro) .

I've wanted to go "off topic" on this blog, since it's my personal space, so to speak. But then I remembered, it's not appropriate here. So, I thought, when is it appropriate to go off topic on your blog? Is it ever appropriate? Read Should You Go “Off Topic” On Your Blog? here.

And, I did find an outlet for my political rant. You can read that here if you're interested (otherwise, I was gonna bust something!). Don't forget to check out the job listings below.

What to Do When You Just Can’t “Get Going” on a Project

I’m working on a rather large project for an SEO client. It’s a real estate client. He owns hundreds of websites and has hired me to write copy for 25 of them.

It’s a relatively simple project, but for the life of me, I just can’t seem to get going on it. All I have to do is write the “About” page and the “Photos” page. The project is due tomorrow and I have about 30 pages of copy to turn in.

I’ve procrastinated and procrastinated on this project because I just don’t look forward to writing about it. So, I decided to write this post to see if I could get to the bottom of why I don’t like this project (oftentimes, writing my thoughts down helps to clarify them for me).

Following is why I can't get going on this project, and what I plan to do about it. If you one day find yourself stuck on a project, maybe this will help you.

SEO Writing: How to Convince Potential Clients to Hire You

As a freelance SEO writer, I send out a lot of queries. I think I’m clear about the services I provide. But, as human beings, we tend to get our wires crossed, so sometimes I receive responses from potential clients that kinda throw me off guard.

This morning for example, I logged on and read the following from a query I sent out yesterday: “What are your rates and what results have you gotten for your customers?”

What threw me was the “what results have you gotten for your customers” part. While on the surface this may seem like a straightforward question, for what I do, it’s not. Let me explain.

4 Tips for Applying to Freelance Writing Jobs on Craigslist -- to Get the Job!

I recently landed three new SEO clients in one day. Hence, I was slammed – too much work to meet all the deadlines without help. So, I immediately placed an ad on Craigslist for SEO writers (SEO writing is my new thing).

Over the next 24 hours, I received roughly 75 responses, and they’re still pouring in, fully a week after I placed the ad. That’s a lot of competition. I outsourced work to three writers from that ad – and have outsourced more work since then. Two of the three I worked with I plan to outsource more work to when I need help.

My point? Once an employer uses you, they will most likely use you again and again and again. Following are some things that, as an “employer,” turned me off, and others that made freelancers stand out (and made me want to call them).

7 Things You Can Do TODAY to Kickstart Your Freelancing Career

This very informative post is on FreelanceSwitch.com, a highly rated freelance site. It outlines 7 things you can do immediately to start landing freelance jobs.

I agree, in principle, with all of the tips outlined here. With 15+ years of freelancing under my belt, however, I have alternate points of view on a couple of things the author writes about, namely:

#1: Create a Name and Logo. While the article’s author, Collis Ta’eed, gives some great tips about things to consider when choosing a name and logo, eg, (make the name distinct, memorable and representative of you), I don’t think it’s something you absolutely need.

So, keep the following in mind when thinking about whether to create a name and logo:

Which markets are you going to target: Why is this important? Because, depending on the market, they may not care whether or not you have an official business name or logo. Take my recent foray into SEO content writing. I took the advice from the post, How I made $100,000 by spending 25 minutes and $0 on Marketing, on SelfMadeChick.com.

In this post, Christine, the blogger details how she put off bringing in business by telling herself things like, I need to get a website, some email marketing software, create a more substantial portfolio, etc. But, these – she came to realize – were just stall tactics that stood in her way of success.

So, one day she composed a simple email to SEO companies that included very basic info (name, contact info, rates, etc.). Within minutes of sending out a few emails she got calls. No fancy log, website, brochure, sales pitch, etc. Just the basics.

When I started to do SEO writing, I followed Christine’s lead and had almost the exact experience. I guess my point here is, don’t put roadblocks in your way.

#2: Register Your Business. I disagree with this for the following reason: As I wrote in the article, Should You Officially Register Your Freelance Business?:

Any type of business you register is going to generate paperwork from good ole Uncle Sam (ie, the IRS). The reason I didn't register some of the businesses I've owned is that I just didn't want to go through the hassle of filling out some inane form because I made $7,000 last year. Some things you will be forced to deal with: Filing annual and/or quarterly taxes (no matter how much you made - or lost); paying business registration fees; getting an EIN number, filing more complicated personal taxes; etc. The paperwork - for even the simplest business - can be, at best, annoying, and at worst, downright harrying.

The best piece of advice I can give you here is to consult with a CPA. They are the only ones who can give you the right informaton as it pertians to your financial situation.

While the ideal would always be to have everything perfect before you start (eg, the company name, the logo, an amazing portfolio, etc.), the best way to get business as a freelancer is to simply start contacting those who need your services.

Or, in the words of Nike, “Just Do It!”

How to Get SEO Writing Work from "Middleman" Providers (Advice About)

This post is in answer to reader Misti Sandefur, who responded to yesterday’s post entitled "How to Set SEO Writing Rates to Make $250-$500+/Day."

Misti commented:

QUESTION: Thanks for the tips. However, I would like to know how you found out who the "middle man" worked for? So far, on all the bid sites where I've read the details, they never mention who they work for, and that's why I asked this question.”

My response:

ANSWER: Misti, I never found out who the contractors worked for -- of course, none will tell you this.

In forums especially, many “middle men/contractors” flat out state that they are freelancers looking for help on client projects. Where they weren't middlemen, they'd just say they were a webmaster building a site on "X" and need "x" number of SEO articles written and were willing to pay "$x".

When I first started to research this niche, I ran across the copywriting forum at Digital Point. This forum encouraged and discouraged me at the same time. Why?

Why There Will Always Be a Need for SEO Content Writers

Well, I got encouraged because I saw that there was a lot of work for SEO writers. And, as content drives search engines, I knew that this was going to be an evergreen profession. Like the telephone, it will be around forever.

While the form and function of it may change, the internet will always need new content. An evergreen need for a service I can provide – well, you can’t get better than that for a business model.

BUT, I was extremely discouraged because of the pay offered. Writing this post, I clicked over just to give you a sample.

Following are some of the rates offered by clients to writers:

Six 400-word articles on acne, wrinkles, aging skin: $3.50/per article.

100 articles ($3 for 500 words) of 500 words each on a specific topic.

Just for comparison sake, Inkwell Editorial (my company) pays $15 per 500-word article (see #2 of this post).

Some rates offered by writers to clients:

High quality article writer, $4 per 500 words article

Original Articles-$2 for 200 words/$3 for 500 words/$5 for 700 words/$7 fr 1000 words

I will write 400 word articles for $8 in batches of 10

I charge $1 per 100 words for articles and $60 per Press Release of 500 words.

Now, for me, these were low. I simply can’t afford to work for these rates. But, I’m not knocking writers who do.

This is free enterprise at work; there were lots of takers for these projects. They may be freelancers with no expenses, or very low ones; be college students looking to pick up some extra cash; someone in debt working to pay off a Visa bill; etc. For whatever reason, these rates work for them.

This is why I say in yesterday’s post, “To be successful in business, you have to consider all components, not just rate.”

Freelance Writing Commitment Contract: Get the Life & Career You Want

This article contains a freelance writing commitment contract. What is this? Before I explain, let me tell you what precipitated it.

I read an excellent article on MSN.com entitled 10 Steps to the Body You Want. As the title implies, the author, a doctor who counsels women trying to lose weight, outlines 10 steps to take to get the body you want.

As I read through the steps, I kept reflecting on the questions I receive almost daily from readers of this blog asking how to go about starting a freelance writing career.

The reason my mind kept wandering back to these readers is that the same advice the author dispensed in this article could have been given to practically every single reader who’ve asked me a question along the lines of, “How can I start freelancing fulltime?”

Sincerely,

Post #39: 40 Days to a Successful Freelance Writing Career

PUBLISHER NOTE: This series was started to answer questions from seminar attendees about what was going to be taught at the Freelance Writing Seminar. Details. I entitled these posts "40 Days to a Successful Freelance Writing Career".

To start at the beginning of the "40 Days" series, click here. And, welcome to the blog. Now, on to today’s post . . .

Want to make $400, $500, $1,000/day freelancing? It's possible, but before I tell you how, let's digress for a minute.

As the 40 Days to a Successful Freelance Writing Career series is winding down, I wanted to end with three observations that prevent many freelance writers from making the income they should be making.

Yesterday in Post #38, we discussed the "little blockers" to success that can prevent you from making the sums mentioned above, which leads us to today's topic . . . how intelligently using technology can make you much more than you ever dreamed possible. Click here to read the entire post.
