SEO Writer: One Freelance Writer's Success Story

Today’s update is on SEO Mary, which I’ve been promising practically all week. I’ve been so busy lately that I didn’t even query Mary. Sweet soul that she is, I think she’s come to feel some responsibility to readers of her foray into SEO writing, so she took it upon herself to email me.

Even though I would have gotten around to it eventually, I’m glad she took the step. FYI, this is officially Part VII of this series. Read it from the beginning here.

Series Note: I had put an official end to this series at Part V. Obviously, it’s gone past that and may go a few more. I’ll always have a post on my blog when I’m going to post an update to the series.

Mary Lands a Client Who LOVES Her Work -- She writes:

Good afternoon, Yuwanda. I've been wanting to e-mail you with an update, but wanted to wait until I had definitive news -- and now I have it! Things are progressing well. I have a client who LOVES my work. I've written seven articles for him so far, and he's hoping to give me more soon. I know I should be marketing more but I'm going to be absolutely swamped with work over the next few weeks, because....

Have a good weekend everybody. I'm feeling a little under the weather, so am knocking off early today to get some rest. Don't forget -- job leads are below.

How to Hire Experienced SEO Writers: Learn from One Freelancer's Unfortunate Experience

This week, I’m doing a Mail Bag Roundup, so to speak. As I mentioned in yesterday’s post, I’ve gotten quite a bit of mail this week that I thought I’d answer here. That way, everyone can benefit from it.

In contrast to yesterday’s newbie query, today’s question is from a reader who’s a “victim” of her own SEO writing success. But, if you ever find yourself in this situation, it can be downright frustrating, to say the least.

Here’s what she wrote to me. Today’s post is a long one, but a chance to learn a ton. So, here goes . . . (read the rest here).

TOMORROW’S POST: I’m going to update you on SEO Mary, who’s flying pretty high these days – and none too soon. I’m so sleepy right now, I’m trying to decide whether to just take a quick nap, or soldier on through and get my workout in . . . Oh, don’t forget to see job leads below.

Guidelines for Building a Freelance Writing Portfolio by Blogging

As many of you know, I contribute to AssociatedContent a lot. One of my subscribers over there asked an interesting question that I answered in my regular Wednesday post at BloggingTips.com.

He, in essence, wanted to know how to build his freelance writing resume by blogging. Even though he's a newbie to freelance writing, I felt compelled to answer because: (i) well, he asked; and (ii) as I say in today's post, I think many of us who have much more experience are hesitant to answer these types of posts in detail because we get them all the time and seem to answer them in 100 different ways.

Knowing What NOT to Do Is as Important -- Or More -- Than Knowing What to Do

But, as this had to do with blogging in particular, which is a relatively new medium (compared to say newsletters or article marketing), I thought it deserved and in-depth post (if for no other reason than to tell him what NOT to do). You can read the full missive here.

Don't forget to read the comment (the first one as of this writing). It's quite illuminating I thought. I have personal experience with this and have been thinking about doing a post on it for a minute now. In due time . . . in due time.

TOMORROW'S POST: We'll turn the tables and I'll answer a question sent in by an SEO writer who is kind of a victim of her own success. Don't forget to check out the freelance job listings below.

Stay tuned!

How to Create an SEO Writing Niche: Question from a Reader

This week, I’ve received a few interesting inquiries from readers of this blog, so thought I’d answer them here the rest of the week, sharing feedback with all.

One freelancer has a question that would be of particular interest to beginners, while the other is wrestling with the dragon of success. Yet another has a blogging question, which I’ll cover tomorrow in my BloggingTips.com post.

Today’s Question from a Reader

QUESTION: Hi, Yuwanda: I recently purchased your E-book on SEO writing and I want to get started as an SEO writer. I have no professional writing experience or writing samples so I decided to go the the GAF (GetaFreelancer.com) website. I figured I might be able to gain some experience and write some material that I could use for samples.

One of the ads for a re-write included an actual article that they wanted re-written and submitted as a sample. The gentlemen contacted me, and said that my re-write was very good. I used that as a sample in a couple of other ads, one of whom also contacted me. So I’ve now written a few articles for $2 apiece and not making any money, but I’m learning a lot of things that I can use later when I’m ready to start marketing myself. I’m kind of stuck on creating a niche for myself.

My career has been primarily in accounting and purchasing, and I also have some non-professional experience with investing. I figured maybe if I marketed myself as a finance and investment expert. I’m not sure if purchasing for a government facility would have any marketability or not….do you have any ideas?? Also, where is the best place to find companies for a contact list? Do you just do searches on the internet for SEO companies?
Thanks, BL
*********

ANSWER: Basically, this reader’s question has to do with defining a niche for herself.

I say go with what you know and/or feel comfortable with. So, BL, as you have experience in accounting and purchasing, and you feel comfortable covering investment topics, I see two strong markets here: accounting and investing. I would focus my marketing efforts on these, which happen to be in higher-paying niches.

Marketing Plan I Propose for BL

First, even though these two categories could be married, I would separate them. You’ll get more work that way. Now, as for your marketing plan, if I were you, I’d do the following:

1) Put up a simple website with three to five article samples under each category. My professional profile page can be found here. SEO Mary followed it and she’s now doing great (I’ll update you on her Friday). Notice how the samples are listed under categories.

Even if you don’t have previously published samples, as I tell you in the ebook, simply create them. Write 3-5, 400-600 word articles and use them as samples.

2) Create Service Offerings: Which services do you want to provide? SEO articles, press releases, blog posts, forum posting, etc. Again, feel free to copy my page if you want – I don’t mind.

3) Create a Pricing Structure: Decide what you want to charge. And, remember, in the beginning, you’re probably going to be spending an hour to an hour and a half on your articles.

Once you get the hang of it, you should be able to cut that time in half, at least. So, if you work full time, create a structure you can live with. Because let me tell you, if you luck up and get a 20, 30 or 40 article order (as I did last week), it’s no fun sitting there doing them for $$5-$10 a piece. I wouldn’t even think about going below $15. I charge $25 for basic articles. I charge up to $50 or more for more technical research-intensive topics.

If you decide to go with accounting and investing, you should get $25 pretty easily. Whatever your pricing structure, set one you can live with for a year or so. That way, you can get some experience under your belt and then raise rates accordingly. Clients don’t like it when you raise rates too quickly, or too often.

4) Create a Basic Email Query: Use an email similar to the one I outline in the ebook. I wouldn’t spend any money in offline advertising, as you allude to in your question. SEO is Search Engine Optimization, an online marketing technique. So do Google searches. Use the technique I outline in the ebook. That should net you all the prospects – and clients – you will ever need.

I haven’t spent a cent on offline marketing to get my SEO clients. It’s all been done online. I outline a complete marketing plan in the ebook, the exact one I followed. That’s truly all I did, no more, no less. Do the same.

5) Stay Away from Sites Like GAF: Don’t do one more article for peanuts. I’m glad you got your feet wet, but please stay away from sites like that. You don’t have to have SEO writing experience to get started in this business. I didn’t even know what it was when I started, and was able to make almost 2K my first month alone once I figured out things like keyword density.
SEO MARY Update Coming on Friday!

I hope this answers your question. Give me an update, a la SEO Mary. Don’t forget, I’m going to update you on her on Friday. She’s doing terrific, I’m excited to report. And, not a minute too soon – as you’ll learn on Friday.

I had a monster project to get off my desk today, so no time to snoop for freelance writing jobs leads. I’ll have some leads for you tomorrow. I’m off to the track (marathon training season is in full swing!)

Tomorrow's Post: A newbie writes in about how to build his freelance credentials via blogging -- should he, how, guest posts -- I'll cover it all.

3 Reasons to Write for Low-Paying Online Sites

I contribute to AssociatedContent.com (AC) and eHow on a pretty regular basis; I’ve posted a couple of articles to Helium.

Regular readers of my blog and newsletter may wonder why I contribute to low-paying online sites like this when I earn more from my SEO and other freelance writing gigs. Well, there are three reasons. One was sitting in my inbox when I logged on this morning. It's what prompted this post. Read the rest here.

FYI, the latest edition of Inkwell Editorial's newsletter was published yesterday. What's inside? An interview with Author, Copywriter and Consultant Shel Horowitz.

Shel shares tips on how to market you freelance writing services on a shoe-string budget (he's written five books grassroots marketing); how he created multiple streams of income (writing, speaking, consulting) and more.

There is also a rundown of my $2K plus week (types of projects, what they consisted of and more). There's also a special offer just for newsletter subscribers. So subscribe to read this, and all previous, issues.

Don't forget to check out today's freelance job leads below.

New Newsletter, Blogging Tips, Freelance Writing Jobs & More!

Today's post can be found at BloggingTips.com. Lately, the presidential race has had me in a boil (from Obama's speech to Rev Wright's YouTube video to the remark made by Geraldine Ferraro) .

I've wanted to go "off topic" on this blog, since it's my personal space, so to speak. But then I remembered, it's not appropriate here. So, I thought, when is it appropriate to go off topic on your blog? Is it ever appropriate? Read Should You Go “Off Topic” On Your Blog? here.

And, I did find an outlet for my political rant. You can read that here if you're interested (otherwise, I was gonna bust something!). Don't forget to check out the job listings below.

Earn $63,000 to $125,000/Yr Writing Articles: It's so possible & here's how

I recently started writing for eHow.com. It’s a community site similar to AssociatedContent.com, another site I also contribute to. I like writing for both sites, because they each offer something unique.

Earn $63,000 to $125,000/year writing simple articles

And yeah, I know $15 per article is peanuts for some, but when you consider that you can write about basically anything you want and that it takes anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes to write an article, that works out to $30 to $60/hour. OR, looked at another way, earning almost $63K to $125K/year writing simple articles. I’ll take it every time.

So, how did I happen upon this gig? How did I get continuous work? How did I make $300 in one day writing for this site? Read on for it all! But first, don't forget to check out the freelance writing jobs below.

Here's to a productive Tuesday every body!

My #1 Tip for Getting More Done During the Day as a Freelance Writer

Last week was hell week. In last Wednesday's post, I likened it to finals week during college.

Because I had such a hellish week last week, which continued through today, I created a series of Quick Tips for Freelance Writers for the week. Well, here's one more, and it's something I'm going to start doing on a regular basis because it works so well.

Today's Freelance Writing Quick Tip

Usually, the first thing I do when I log on to work is check email. I've trained myself to be pretty disciplined, but it can still get me off track some mornings, depending on what's waiting for me in my inbox.

I've stopped doing that. Instead, I get right down to work -- writing that is. Whether it's updating my blog, knocking out a few articles for clients or working on my ebooks, I write a little before opening the email bandit.

How to Get Through Chunks of Work & Feel Accomplished for the Rest of the Day

I've found that I get absorbed in what I'm doing and usually am able to get through a chunk of work -- which makes me feel immediately as if I've made a dent in my workload for the day. Sometimes I'll spend a half hour writing, or it may even stretch to two hours. But I usually finish a project, or a part of a project, before checking email.

In the short time I've been doing this, I've noticed that I'm not missing as much as I think I'm missing by not checking email first. I was in the workforce before email became the norm, so I remember what it was like to go to work and, well . . . get down to work. There was no checking email or other various online accounts first.

What this has taught me is (i) you're not missing as much as you think you're missing (you've only been trained to think so); and (ii) marrying old ways of working with new technology can create a perfect balance.

Try it, and let me know how it works for you.

Description: I need a series of articles about different types of photography. I need full rights and to be the exclusive buyer (e.g. if someone else buys a usage licence first I will have to pass). I have indicated a $50-$100 price range but only because the request form wouldn\'t let me be more broad - I\'ll also consider cheaper and more expensive articles. Articles can include general information, history, techniques, common equipment, etc. I will consider buying supporting photos/illustrations as well (especially if they are quite unique), but generally I prefer to spend my money on words rather than images.

If this goes well I will be in the market for more photography articles, especially tutorials, tips, etc. I am also considering hiring a photography blog writer.

5 Rules to Adhere to When Approaching Others to Write for Your Blog

I have a regular blogging gig over at BloggingTips.com. Since I’ve been writing for that site, I’ve received a few offers to blog for other sites. That’s what prompted this post. Before I detail this post though, I interrupt this missive to make an announcement . . . drum roll . . . this blog’s accompanying site received an award . . .

InkwellEditorial.com is one of The Top 100 Freelancer Blogs. We’re listed as #13, and although the list doesn’t assign value on placement, I believe in cosmic forces working for you. My lucky number is 13 (my birthday is February 13th; because I entered the world on the 13th day, I’ve always thought of it as a lucky number).

FYI, the 40 Days to a Successful Freelance Writing Career series mentioned in our listing starts here.

Today's Quick Tip for Freelance Writers

Tres cool . . . now back to the aforementioned post, 5 Rules to Adhere to When Approaching Others to Write for Your Blog.

Now that blogging is becoming more mainstream, it seems that everyone has a blog and the need for bloggers is growing by leaps and bounds. But, like most things in freelance writing, not everyone wants to pay. And, the opportunities are cloaked in phrases like “guest blogging” (which can be great given certain factors) and the over-used word, exposure, which has become synonymous with “no pay.”

As someone who’s been approached, I outlined what I think is an ideal approach, whether you’re offering a paid opportunity, or not. Read the entire post here. Enjoy, send in your feedback and be sure to check out today’s freelance job listings below.

My #1 Tip for Creating Better Content

Today’s quick tip will be truly quick, unlike yesterday’s. It is inspired by a post on Skelliewag.org, a great blog by the way.

Today's Freelance Writing Quick Tip

Skellie advises to write in advance, that way you can give more thought to each post, say exactly what you mean to say, avoid being rushed and come up with better ideas. I took this to heart and applied it almost right away.

When I looked at my calendar this week, I knew I wouldn’t be able to write full-fledged posts. What I did though was write out a week’s worth of ideas to post on each day – calling them “Quick Tips for Freelance Writers.” While I didn’t write the actual post, I did write the idea down and do the behind-the-scenes research I wanted to reference in each post (eg, link to a post on another blog).

This has saved me precious time this week, as I usually spend anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours on each post. Read Skellie's post here.

Happy hump day everybody (Do freelancers have hump days? Hmmmmm . . .),

Freelance Editor

Freelance Copywriter for e-greetings cards

Part-Time Online Editor

Writer/Fundraiser (if you have this type of experience, send in your resume for freelance work; they’ll undoubtedly need you at some point)

Content Writer (if they need unique content on a regular basis, they have a need for freelancers – apply!)
Direct Marketing Copywriter

Article Writing & Re-Writing (Caution: I usually don’t like to list jobs from bid sites, but I did so here b/c they have lots of jobs and if you can land one client from them and work out a decent rate for ongoing work, then it will be worth it. Keep in mind though, it may take you a while to land a client b/c there are so many who will work for pennies. I refuse to list jobs from Elance and GetaFreelancer though; the pay on those sites is just ridiculous in my opinion).

Forum Posting (IMHO, the next hot thing in online writing. Similar to blog posting, only in forums. If you land the right gig, can be great filler income.)

Get Specifc to Get More Freelance Writing Work

You’re going to have to bear with me to get to today’s freelance writing tip of the day, but it’s worth it, I swear!

Eat, Pray, Love for More Freelance Writing Work!

Right now, I’m reading Eat, Pray, Love. You Oprah fans know the book I’m referring to. It’s a New York Times best seller that’s basically about one woman’s journey of self-discovery that began with her desire NOT to have a child. When I first heard of it, I thought, great, another middle-class suburban woman who has it made complaining about life.

As a side note, I have very little patience for what we in America term “suffering.” Maybe it’s because I’m black and grew up poor, but I don’t believe most of us in the country come close to knowing what suffering is. Our suffering is due to our lack of keeping up with the Joneses.

Soldiers on the front line suffer, children who got to sleep with distended bellies from hunger suffer. Most of us don’t suffer. But, I digress.

My fiancĂ© bought me the book and as I began to read it, I could have pooped myself from the shame of prejudging. How enlightening. So, you may be thinking, what the heck does this have to do with the topic of this post – finding freelance work quickly? Hold your horses, I’m getting there!

At one point in the book, the main character is in an ashram in India praying and meditating. She recounts why it’s important to be specific when you pray. Now, not to get all religious, but the point of her story is, if you can’t get specific about your needs, then how do you expect the universe (God) to grant them to you? Of course, God knows what you want, but He wants to know if you know what you want. Powerful stuff, huh?

Freelance Writing Quick Tip of the Day

So, my Freelance Writing Quick Tip for today is to get specific about what you want from your freelance writing career. Instead of saying, "I want to make enough to quit my job," or "I want a “successful” freelance career", quantify that.

For example, by the end of April, I will land my first client who will give me a project worth at least $200. By the end of 2008, I will be juggling 5-10 projects a week and making at least $200/day. I will quit my job by March 30, 2009. My monthly income will be $4,000-$5,000 month. State your intent as fact, not as "I'm going to be . . . "

When you get very, very specific about your needs, it clues the universe in that you’re serious about your intent. When you get serious, you put some thought into it (and therein lies the specificity). Then, the universe gets serious about giving you what you want.

Now, that doesn’t mean that you’ll get exactly what you want; but you are guaranteed to get what you need. And the funny thing is, what you need is often soooo much better than what you thought you wanted.

How Getting Specific in the Last Week Is Getting Me Out of Credit Card Debt – for Good!

I started doing this about a week ago. I’ve had a few credit cards with balances that I want to pay off. But, I haven't been too specific about when, ie, "I'll do it by the end of the year." While that's a target goal, it's not a specific goal. Now that it's specific, I'm paying attention to how I spend chunks of my time--how I market, to whom, charging what, doing what kind of work, etc.

When I read this passage about a week and a half ago, I assigned a payoff date to all of my debt – even my mortgage. And voila, this week, a boatload of work has been dumped in my lap which will allow me to make some real headway.

Since I read this passage in the book (it’s on page 177 if you have a copy of the book and aren’t there yet) I’ve been moving through every day with a more defined purpose. My thinking is, “Holy moly, this new age crap really works!” Seriously though, I know it’s because when you focus, you take steps to make things happen instead of letting things happen to you.

Now, that’s my final word on this “not so quick freelance writing” tip of the day. Check out the jobs below, and get busy moving purposefully through each day.
