I’m working on a rather large project for an SEO client. It’s a real estate client. He owns hundreds of websites and has hired me to write copy for 25 of them.
It’s a relatively simple project, but for the life of me, I just can’t seem to get going on it. All I have to do is write the “About” page and the “Photos” page. The project is due tomorrow and I have about 30 pages of copy to turn in.
I’ve procrastinated and procrastinated on this project because I just don’t look forward to writing about it. So, I decided to write this post to see if I could get to the bottom of why I don’t like this project (oftentimes, writing my thoughts down helps to clarify them for me).
Following is why I can't get going on this project, and what I plan to do about it. If you one day find yourself stuck on a project, maybe this will help you.
Read the rest of how to handle difficult projects here.

“Old School” Internet Marketing: Whatever Happened to Banner Impressions?
It's my day to post over at BloggingTips.com. As I announced in last Wednesday's post, A Day in the Life of an SEO Writer, I'm a regular contributor to this blog now.
Today I reminisce about how complicated internet marketing has become; I long for simpler times.
Remember when banner impressions were all the rage? I rarely, if ever, read about this anymore. Now there is social media, long-tail keywords and keyword density to worry about. Whatever happened to simply updating your site/blog with relevant content -- nothing more, nothing less?
Read the entire post of ruminations, explanations and general kvetching here. Oh yeah, I do share 4 things I do on a regular basis to drive more traffic to my site/blog, so it is a bit more than purging!
Do you miss simpler internet marketing days? Sound off.

How Will a Recession Affect Freelance Writers?
This question was written about recently on ChrisBlogging.com. He writes:
Personally, I do not know much about American economics. …. While it is hard to predict the future, a lot of so-called experts feel that a recession is on the way. Like most, this worries me for a number of different reasons.
I think Chris is Australian.
I decided to answer this question because I’m American and have been in the industry long enough to weigh in from a "Monday morning quarterback" perspective. First, a little background:
I have been in publishing since 1987, and have been freelancing since 1993. I’ve been though Black Monday (the stock market crash of 1987), the dot/com boom/bust, Desert Storm, the 9/11 tragedy, the war on Iraq and now this latest debacle crushing the American economy – the subprime mortgage crisis.
From 1996-2004, I owned an editorial staffing agency in New York City. I staffed temp, temp-to-perm and full-time positions for large companies (Random House, McGraw-Hill, etc), and small, one-person startups alike.
I write all this to say, I have seen the direct effects of a boom and a bust. And, I have heard the reason why a firm was either hiring, firing or laying off directly from Human Resource Directors.
And, you know what …

How to Create Passive Online Income in 3 Easy Steps
I declared last November Freelance Writers Technology Month. Here is a little recap of why:
“Simply put, I wanted to increase my online income. . . . I’ve been a freelance writer since 1993. I make a good living at it, but the last couple of years I’ve been kind of restless in my career. I want to work less and, perhaps more importantly, create passive streams of income that will sustain me into my golden years. . . . As I wrote in Why Freelance Writers May Be the Poorest Internet Entrepreneurs, we’re not very good at embracing technology – which is how the real money is made online.”
Read the rest of this missive here.
So, what does that have to do with today’s post, “How to Create Passive Online Income in 3 Easy Steps.”
During the hours I spent researching ways to make passive money online for Freelance Writer’s Technology Month, this was one of the ideas that appealed to me, as I wrote about in Post #5 of the series entitled, Turn $1/Day into an Online Empire: How to Make Money with Minisites.
Today, as I was surfing, I ran across this post, which explains in a very detailed three-step process how to go about creating profitable niche minisites, results you can expect, how/where to find ideas for profitable niches and more.
I’ve bookmarked this for when I’m ready to start building my minisites. If you’re interested in making passive online income, this will give you all the info you need to get started.
Hope you’re having a good weekend.
Sincerely,

SEO Writing: How to Convince Potential Clients to Hire You
As a freelance SEO writer, I send out a lot of queries. I think I’m clear about the services I provide. But, as human beings, we tend to get our wires crossed, so sometimes I receive responses from potential clients that kinda throw me off guard.
This morning for example, I logged on and read the following from a query I sent out yesterday: “What are your rates and what results have you gotten for your customers?”
What threw me was the “what results have you gotten for your customers” part. While on the surface this may seem like a straightforward question, for what I do, it’s not. Let me explain.

A Day in the Life of an SEO Writer
Almost a year ago (2/15/07), I wrote a post entitled A Day in the Life of a Busy Commercial Freelance Writer. Oh how times have changed!
My post today, entitled A Day in the Life of an SEO Writer, highlights how much things have changed in my freelance writing business since I wrote that entry last year. Today's post, by the way, is over at BloggingTips.com. I realize that I'm much happier with my work now than I was then.
I have a more diverse clientele, enjoy the type of work I do more, have gotten super organized and am making much more money than I was this time last year (I've had an incredible few months since I started writing SEO content, stretching back to right before the holidays).
Yep, I've definitely found my niche.
FYI, BloggingTips.com is an industry-leading blog I now write for (today was my first post). Check it out. BloggingTips.com is a multi-author blog which is dedicated to helping bloggers create, maintain and improve their blogs. [Source: BloggingTips.com]
There's lots of stuff there on how to make money online, how to make money as a freealance writer, how to make money blogging, etc. It's all written by industry leading authors like Deborah [Ng] from FreelanceWritingGigs.com and Angela [Booth] from Blogging For Dollars. And now, little ole me. Yep, they let me join the club!
Every Wednesday, my posts can be found over at BloggingTips.com. Don't worry, I'll post a link here directing you to it.
Here's to some wing spreading!

Blog Marketing: How to Get Free PR for Your Blog
I recently “hired” a PR firm for my blog. Why is hired in quotation marks? Let me explain.
I turned a tip I got from reader Viqi French’s blog into a post on my blog. After I completed the marketing task written about here, I went back for seconds and completed another marketing task (#2) mentioned in this post on her blog.
This is when I got hit with a Eureka moment – why not “hire” this blog as my firm’s PR rep! After all, I was already implementing some of the suggestions listed here. If I checked back on say a weekly basis and just did even on thing suggested by this online marketing firm, in a year’s time, I could be deriving some real benefit from my PR efforts.
How to Hire a PR Firm for Your Blog/Website -- FREE
Following are some things to look for in an online marketing firm – whether it’s paid, or free.
Marketing Expertise: The first thing you want to look for is if the firm has the type expertise you’re looking for. Viqi French, the author behind FiercelyStrategic.blogspot.com is, according to her online bio, “… a Chicago-based publicist and writer who operates a marketing and publishing boutique, Pet Leopard Communications.”
Industry Expertise: Over and beyond overall marketing and PR expertise, any firm you hire should have expertise particular to your niche.
I like Viqi’s blog because she understands the industry I work in – e-publishing. So, she knows about traditional offline methods (eg, brochures and press kits) in addition to online methods like article marketing and ebook publishing (she’s authored her own ebook).
The fact that she’s authored her own book means that the advice she dispenses comes from firsthand experience – which I know from publishing my blog/website is the best kind of advice.
Detailed Advice: Some blogs are written as snippets. There’s no real meat; that’s saved for paid membership clubs or some kind of fee. And, let me rush to say, this is fine.
If you’re going to “hire” a blog to get some PR help from though, it needs to be one that is detailed. As you’re going to be doing the actual work, you’re going to need some kind of depth to the posts.
Check out my revamped, completed Squidoo Lens here. I had set it up a few months ago, but never published it. Upon reading this post on Viqi’s blog, I went back and completed it.
NOTE: Many of the tips you're going to run across you may already be familiar with. However, like hiring a personal trainer, you may know what to do, but when you "hire" someone to tell you what to do, you feel more obligated and dedicated. And, this is what most need to keep them on track with their marketing efforts.
Today’s a holiday; ostensibly you have some time. So, log on and see what PR you can get done to further your online marketing efforts! See this post to get started.
Happy Martin Luther King, Jr. Day everybody.

Blog Posting Rates: How Much Should You Charge for Blog Posting?
Five years ago, blog posting didn’t even exist as a popular freelance job. Now, it’s one of the new media jobs that’s growing in popularity, and one I added to my list of services as an SEO writer because clients kept asking me for it.
But, how much should you charge for it? That depends. Following are some things to consider when you are trying to decide what to charge for blog posting.
Read the rest here: 4 Guidelines for Setting Blog Posting Rates.
And on a completely unrelated, but fun, note . . . It's snowing here in Atlanta -- it's happended twice in one week -- a rarity in this part of the country (one I'm thoroughly enjoying). I'm off to enjoy the fireplace and watch a movie. Hope you're enjoying your weekend.

4 Tips for Applying to Freelance Writing Jobs on Craigslist -- to Get the Job!
I recently landed three new SEO clients in one day. Hence, I was slammed – too much work to meet all the deadlines without help. So, I immediately placed an ad on Craigslist for SEO writers (SEO writing is my new thing).
Over the next 24 hours, I received roughly 75 responses, and they’re still pouring in, fully a week after I placed the ad. That’s a lot of competition. I outsourced work to three writers from that ad – and have outsourced more work since then. Two of the three I worked with I plan to outsource more work to when I need help.
My point? Once an employer uses you, they will most likely use you again and again and again. Following are some things that, as an “employer,” turned me off, and others that made freelancers stand out (and made me want to call them).

Get Published on Amazon in 24 Hours -- FREE!
Yep you can get published on Amazon in as little as 24 hours.
When I ran across this post on Pat Doyle's blog, I couldn't believe it. I check it out, and it's legit. The requirements are pretty simple, as outlined here in the Terms and Conditions. A quick overview:
**Agree to and comply with the Digital Text Platform Terms and Conditions.
**Have a valid US bank account
**A Social Security Number (SSN), EIN or TIN.
Just wondering if anyone has tried this and what kind of sales they've made. In March, I was going to buy a block of ISBN numbers and get my ebooks on Amazon, but this may be a little quicker.
If anyone has any feedback on this, I'd love to hear about it.

25 Ways to Increase Blog Traffic & Search Engine Optimization
As I announced last week on this blog, I've had some incredible successes these past few months in my freelance writing career. I've been at this for 15+ years, and the renewed passion I feel for my career has made me want to work more, not less.
I now know why people like Bill Gates and Oprah work. It's not becuase they need the money; it's the love and challenge of their careers that drive them. (Now if I could only bring in their type of money . . . )
So, what does this have to do with today's post? Well, in light of my renewed career passion, I've started to do some weekend blogging. One of the best ways to use weekend blogging to increase your freelance writing success is to get in some marketing.
I ran across the following blog directories on the Fiercely Strategic blog at http://fiercelystrategic.blogspot.com/. While no phones are ringing, no IMs are popping up on your screen and no projects that need your attention today are on your desk, spend an hour or so registering your blog with these 25 blog directories to increase its traffic.
If you do no other marketing activity all week long, at least you will have done something to add to your freelance writing income.
Easy marketing for a lazy Sunday afternoon.
Sincerely,

7 Things You Can Do TODAY to Kickstart Your Freelancing Career
This very informative post is on FreelanceSwitch.com, a highly rated freelance site. It outlines 7 things you can do immediately to start landing freelance jobs.
I agree, in principle, with all of the tips outlined here. With 15+ years of freelancing under my belt, however, I have alternate points of view on a couple of things the author writes about, namely:
#1: Create a Name and Logo. While the article’s author, Collis Ta’eed, gives some great tips about things to consider when choosing a name and logo, eg, (make the name distinct, memorable and representative of you), I don’t think it’s something you absolutely need.
So, keep the following in mind when thinking about whether to create a name and logo:
Which markets are you going to target: Why is this important? Because, depending on the market, they may not care whether or not you have an official business name or logo. Take my recent foray into SEO content writing. I took the advice from the post, How I made $100,000 by spending 25 minutes and $0 on Marketing, on SelfMadeChick.com.
In this post, Christine, the blogger details how she put off bringing in business by telling herself things like, I need to get a website, some email marketing software, create a more substantial portfolio, etc. But, these – she came to realize – were just stall tactics that stood in her way of success.
So, one day she composed a simple email to SEO companies that included very basic info (name, contact info, rates, etc.). Within minutes of sending out a few emails she got calls. No fancy log, website, brochure, sales pitch, etc. Just the basics.
When I started to do SEO writing, I followed Christine’s lead and had almost the exact experience. I guess my point here is, don’t put roadblocks in your way.
#2: Register Your Business. I disagree with this for the following reason: As I wrote in the article, Should You Officially Register Your Freelance Business?:
Any type of business you register is going to generate paperwork from good ole Uncle Sam (ie, the IRS). The reason I didn't register some of the businesses I've owned is that I just didn't want to go through the hassle of filling out some inane form because I made $7,000 last year. Some things you will be forced to deal with: Filing annual and/or quarterly taxes (no matter how much you made - or lost); paying business registration fees; getting an EIN number, filing more complicated personal taxes; etc. The paperwork - for even the simplest business - can be, at best, annoying, and at worst, downright harrying.
The best piece of advice I can give you here is to consult with a CPA. They are the only ones who can give you the right informaton as it pertians to your financial situation.
While the ideal would always be to have everything perfect before you start (eg, the company name, the logo, an amazing portfolio, etc.), the best way to get business as a freelancer is to simply start contacting those who need your services.
Or, in the words of Nike, “Just Do It!”
Sincerely,
Yuwanda Black, Publisher

How to Get SEO Writing Work from "Middleman" Providers (Advice About)
This post is in answer to reader Misti Sandefur, who responded to yesterday’s post entitled "How to Set SEO Writing Rates to Make $250-$500+/Day."
Misti commented:
QUESTION: Thanks for the tips. However, I would like to know how you found out who the "middle man" worked for? So far, on all the bid sites where I've read the details, they never mention who they work for, and that's why I asked this question.”
My response:
ANSWER: Misti, I never found out who the contractors worked for -- of course, none will tell you this.
In forums especially, many “middle men/contractors” flat out state that they are freelancers looking for help on client projects. Where they weren't middlemen, they'd just say they were a webmaster building a site on "X" and need "x" number of SEO articles written and were willing to pay "$x".
When I first started to research this niche, I ran across the copywriting forum at Digital Point. This forum encouraged and discouraged me at the same time. Why?
Why There Will Always Be a Need for SEO Content Writers
Well, I got encouraged because I saw that there was a lot of work for SEO writers. And, as content drives search engines, I knew that this was going to be an evergreen profession. Like the telephone, it will be around forever.
While the form and function of it may change, the internet will always need new content. An evergreen need for a service I can provide – well, you can’t get better than that for a business model.
BUT, I was extremely discouraged because of the pay offered. Writing this post, I clicked over just to give you a sample.
Following are some of the rates offered by clients to writers:
Six 400-word articles on acne, wrinkles, aging skin: $3.50/per article.
100 articles ($3 for 500 words) of 500 words each on a specific topic.
Just for comparison sake, Inkwell Editorial (my company) pays $15 per 500-word article (see #2 of this post).
Some rates offered by writers to clients:
High quality article writer, $4 per 500 words article
Original Articles-$2 for 200 words/$3 for 500 words/$5 for 700 words/$7 fr 1000 words
I will write 400 word articles for $8 in batches of 10
I charge $1 per 100 words for articles and $60 per Press Release of 500 words.
Now, for me, these were low. I simply can’t afford to work for these rates. But, I’m not knocking writers who do.
This is free enterprise at work; there were lots of takers for these projects. They may be freelancers with no expenses, or very low ones; be college students looking to pick up some extra cash; someone in debt working to pay off a Visa bill; etc. For whatever reason, these rates work for them.
This is why I say in yesterday’s post, “To be successful in business, you have to consider all components, not just rate.”

How to Set SEO Writing Rates to Make $250-$500+/Day
As I contemplated writing this article, I thought, another one on this dreaded topic (freelance writing rates). “Why can’t we all just get along,” is the motto that is running itself over and over in my head right now.
BUT, I’m going to tackle this anyway. Sometimes, progress just takes a while.
As frequent readers of this blog know, I started to take on SEO writing projects last year. It was a new niche for me, so I researched every aspect of it. Rates, of course, was at the top of the list.
Almost all of the research I did was disheartening. Much of what I read about rates on SEO writing was low – very low. Most of the assignments offered rates like $1-$4 for 350-500 word articles. And that’s not a typo. If $5 was offered, it was like – woohoo! – a “good rate.” I was horrified and this almost put me off entering the SEO writing niche.
But, with 15 years of freelance writing experience under my belt, and almost a dozen as a small business owner, I had a gut feeling that this was a niche where some real money could be made (I recently logged over $500 in one day in orders and had to hire help, so my gut was right).
Freelance Writers: How to Stop Competing on Rate & Win as Many Clients as You Can Handle
So, why am I telling you all this? Because when it came time to set my rates, I didn’t even try to compete with what others were offering. I took the following into consideration when I set my rates for writing SEO content.
Read the rest of this post here.
NOTE: I changed the title of this post because I'm trying to get better at writing these. I think this one is more effective than the original title, How to Stop Competing on Rate & Win as Many Clients as You Can Handle?
What do you think?
RE: Response to yesterday’s request for interview subjects: I received quite a few responses and will be going through them this evening. I’m up against a couple of deadlines that have to be met today.
So, if you wrote in, sit tight. I’ll be in touch even if you aren’t selected for this month’s newsletter (there’s a good chance I’ll want to interview you for a future issue).

SEO Writing Job; Seeking Freelance Writers to Interview
Two things today folks:
1. Newsletter Notice
Inkwell Editorial’s newsletter was supposed to be published today. The interviewee, however, stood me up (ie, did not return the questionnaire). So, I’ll publish it next week (Wed, 1/16).
In five years of publishing newsletters off and on, this has never happened to me, so I’m a bit perplexed. So, I need some help! Hence, the following:
Seeking Freelance Writers to Interview
I'm seeking a freelance writer who writes SEO content to interview for this month's issue. Questions (8-10 of them) will be emailed and you will have 3-4 days to respond. If interested, please respond and you will be sent the questions right away (info [at] inkwelleditorial.com: Put "Interview Me" in the subject line so I can get to it quickly).
FYI, newsletter is emailed list of over 17,000 subscribers and the most recent copy can be accessed here: http://www.inkwelleditorial.com/Newsletter/12-5-07-freelance-writing-newsletter.pdf (links to all previous issues are included in this most recent issue).
NOTE: I'm always looking for successful freelancers to interview for the newsletter, which comes out every 3-6 weeks. So, if you're a creative professional (eg, writer, newsletter publisher, ebook author, cartoonist, illustrator, logo designer, etc.), who wants to be featured in a future issue, please email a link to your website/blog so I can check you out and get back to you.
I respond to all queries, usually within 3-4 days.
**************************************************
2. Freelance Writing Job: Seeking SEO Writers
I placed an ad on Craigslist last night for freelance SEO writers. I got myself into a bit of a pickle with deadlines, so needed some immediate help.
From that ad, I’ve lined up three to start outsourcing projects to on a regular basis. If you want to be on the list for future consideration, just email me a short note (info [at] inkwelleditorial.com: Put SEO Writer in the subject line).
Sometime the next few weeks, I’m going import all email addresses of interested parties in a freelance database that I will send job notices out to when I need work done. As I said, I’m set for right now, but this is for future consideration.
I have clients who request articles on every conceivable topic -- from wedding accessories to recording equipment -- so need writers with various types of writing expertise.
I look forward to the possibility of working with you.
For reasons I don't understand, Craigslist flagged my post for removal (they say sometimes this happens for the wrong reason, so I can just repost). But for all those who've written to me asking, following is what the ad said:
Freelance Writing Job: 500-word SEO Articles
I'm a busy SEO writer looking for new SEO writers who want intermittent work (eg, 5-10 articles/week at $15/piece).
All are 450-500 words and have 2-4 day turnaround times. IMMEDIATE ASSIGNMENT -- 2 ARTICLES ON ROUTERS DUE TODAY (1/9) AT 2PM. 450-500 words each. $15/per article. Paid immediately upon receipt.
FYI, the bulk of the work I have right now is for articles on real estate, mortgages and tech stuff. Although, I have SEO clients who request articles on every conceivable topic -- from wedding accessories to recording equipment.
I pay via PayPal, so please have a PayPal account (it's free to get one if you don't already have it). I'm looking for writers I can form a relationship with for the long haul. If interested, contact me for further details.

Do Bloggers Need To Unionize?
This is an interesting post on WebProNews. Food for thought on a lazy Sunday morning.
Bloggers unionizing -- at least it's starting to be recognized as a true profession. Could respect -- and decent pay -- for online writers be far behind?
What do you think?
FYI, did you catch yesterday's post, How Weekend Blogging Can Increase Your Freelance Writing Success?
Enjoy the rest of the weekend. :-)

How Weekend Blogging Can Increase Your Freelance Writing Success
I've been having an incredible run of success in my freelance writing lately. I targeted a new niche -- SEO writing -- that's taken off amazingly. You can read about that here.
I published my 8th ebook that's been my fastest selling one to date. And, my blog and website rankings are spiking.
Get More Weekend Traffic for Your Website/Blog: How Weekend Blogging Can Increase Your Freelance Writing Success
Why am I telling you all this? Because success inspires success. I'm so excited that I'm inspired to blog on the weekends, something I practically never do. But, as weekend traffic on blogs and websites is usually low, why do it?
A post at DoshDosh.com I read a few weeks ago inspired me to examine this, in spite of the downturn in traffic -- and make it successful. If you're serious about making money online by the way, DoshDosh is a "must favorite" site. It's one of the few I visit on a regular basis.
The one tip I've found to be incredibly true in this post over at DoshDosh is commenting on blogs.
Maki (DoshDosh webmaster) writes: "While many blogs don’t update during the weekend, you can still comment on the ones that do. Focus on those with more traffic and try to be the first few to leave a comment. Make your comment relevant and you’re likely to receive some visitors from others who visit the same blog."
I spent a couple of hours last night posting comments to some blogs and just before I logged off, checked my PayPal account one last time. At 1:20am what did I find -- an ebook order.
Now, can this be attributed to my late-night blogging efforts? Who knows. But, what I do know is that most of my orders are received during daylight hours. A late-night order is unusual. So ...
On Monday, I'll give some specific tips on "late-night blogging" to help you increase your income. I've been doing it for the last few weeks, and have seen some definite results.
Enjoy the weekend everybody.

Freelance Writing Commitment Contract: Get the Life & Career You Want
This article contains a freelance writing commitment contract. What is this? Before I explain, let me tell you what precipitated it.
I read an excellent article on MSN.com entitled 10 Steps to the Body You Want. As the title implies, the author, a doctor who counsels women trying to lose weight, outlines 10 steps to take to get the body you want.
As I read through the steps, I kept reflecting on the questions I receive almost daily from readers of this blog asking how to go about starting a freelance writing career.
The reason my mind kept wandering back to these readers is that the same advice the author dispensed in this article could have been given to practically every single reader who’ve asked me a question along the lines of, “How can I start freelancing fulltime?”
